We are planning a recce for this race on saturday the 25th of April at 10.30am. We will meet in Glenmalure Lodge car park , its a short jog to the race start.
If you have not run this race and are planning to i would strongly recommend you do this recce. In bad weather one can easily get lost and take an incorrect turn.
Please come prepared with proper kit in case of weather changes.
This is a fabulous race and in general these championship races are poorly supported. If you are unable to make the Wednesday races and/or find them to short!, here's is your opportunity to try something different ! The recce will take about 2 hours.
Cormac O Ceallaigh Apr 24, 8:37PM Reminder:

BrĂan O'Meara May 14, 10:16AM Hi

When does the registration close?

Thanks
Niamh O Ceallaigh May 14, 10:25AM Registration will close at 11.40 sharp.
It is a few mins drive up to the start from regisration.
Jason Kehoe May 14, 4:46PM I guess some bad weather is expected? Required kit threw me off a bit. Any chance someone has a lend of a spare compass for the race on Sat until I get a chance to buy one?

Any suggestions on one to buy while I'm at it? I saw one that can be held with a thumb strap while running, are these recommended?

Cheers,
JK
Kevin O'Riordan May 14, 4:56PM If you want to keep the map orientated in the right direction while running at speed, then you can't beat a thumb-strap compass. I use this one when orienteering: http://www.ultrasport.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=323 . (Make sure you go with left-thumb version if you're right handed). Baseplate compasses are useful for doing various bearings with but are more suited to recovering from getting lost than for racing in my opinion.
Niamh O Ceallaigh May 14, 6:10PM Jason,

If you are looking for your first compass, you might find a nice clear baseplate compass easier to start with. Thumb compasses are great if you are confident using a compass, but are a bit fiddly if you are only learning.

Silva is a good brand. Be wary of very cheap compasses. Try it out by twisting it around in the shop. The quicker the needle settles, the better.

Come down to registration early and I will run through the basics with you as there is not much point having one if you don't know how to use it!!
Unfortunately I don't have a spare one for you for Saturday.

Niamh

Joe Lalor May 14, 11:14PM Jason, Will have spare compass on Sat.
Jason Kehoe May 15, 10:09AM Thanks for the compass advice Kevin and Niamh.

Joe, that's great, thanks for the dig out! I'll be helping out with registration tomorrow. See you then.

JK.
Sean Hassett May 15, 3:44PM Competitors should ensure that they know how to use that compass they will be carrying with them!
diarmuid O'Colmain May 15, 4:03PM Even more important to have a map so that if you get lost, and meet a walker (reasonably likely in this area) they can put you back on track. Very few people will ever have heard of Ballybraid, but most mountain walkers know where they are and could help a person to take the right direction back to the Finish.
Mick Hanney May 15, 4:08PM Whilst mobile signals are not dependable in the mountains is a phone a mandatory kit item? If you go astray, have a signal and have the directors no. programmed in you can at least let someone know.
Niamh O Ceallaigh May 15, 4:16PM Mick,

A phone is not compulsory.
It is however a good idea. There is coverage on most of the higher ground of this route. The imra emergency number is printed on the back of each runners number. If you are having difficulty getting a signal and are in trouble, ring emergency services on 112.

Paul Joyce May 16, 4:17PM Well done to Niamh and Cormac, and their helpers, on organizing a terrific race today. We were spared the worst of overnight weather conditions, but the mandatory safety kit was reassuring to carry.
Particular congratulations to Cormac, on the race of his career in finishing a well deserved 6th.
Niamh and Cormac O Ceallaigh May 17, 6:57PM Thanks to all competitors for their cooperation in bringing the required kit.
