| Gerry Brady | Jun 25, 7:09PM | The International Youths Challenge mountain race will be held in Germany this weekend. In 2008 Ireland were fourth boys team and fifth girls team led home by Michael Dowling (9th) and Gayle Finn (19th). This year the standard looks tougher with 10 teams in the boys race and eight teams in the girls race. The individual winners from last year, Andrey Rusakov (Russia) and Polina Avdeeva (Russia), are both competing again. Joining Ireland will be the four Home countries as well as hosts Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Poland, Russia and Slovenia. Niamh Denny (DSD) is coached by the legendary Eddie Mc Donagh. Her best track performance this year was in the All Ireland Schools senior 3000m where she finished fourth in 10.51. Niamh was 13th in the senior race in the 2009 All Ireland Schools cross-country and sixth in the intermediate race in 2008. Aine McCann (East Down) is coached by international athlete Kerry Harty. Aine is better known as an orienteer but has good track credentials finishing third in the intermediate 3000m in the Ulster schools track and field championships this year in 10:40. Aine won the intermediate race in the Irish schools mountain running championships. Sinead Cronin (Celtic) is coached by Mary McKenna who was an international 800m runner. Sinead was 23rd in the intermediate race in the Irish schools cross-country and was a close second in the intermediate race in the Irish schools mountain running championships. Sinead has improved her track PBs to 2:27 for 800m and 5:12 for 1500m this season. Jonathan Phillips (Roundwood) was 23rd in the senior race in the Irish schools cross-country and second in the senior race in the Irish schools mountain running championships. James Griffin (St. Laurence O Toole) is coached by PL Curran and John Maye. James was third in the Irish schools 1500m steeplechase in 4:42 and 24th in the intermediate race in the Irish schools cross-country. He won the intermediate race in the Irish schools mountain running championships. Michael Treacy (Rathfarnham) is coached by Philip Halpin. Michael was third in the mile race in the Irish schools in 4:41 and 19th in the intermediate race in the Irish schools cross-country. He was third in the intermediate race in the Irish schools mountain running championships. Boys Jonathan Phillips (East Glendalough / Roundwood) James Griffin (St. Marys Knockbeg / St. Laurence O Toole) Michael Treacy (High School Rathgar / Rathfarnham) Girls Niamh Denny (Our Ladys Grove Goatstown / DSD) Aine McCann (Down High School / East Down) Sinead Cronin (St. Dominics Cabra / Celtic) Managers Mags Greenan (Clonliffe) Leo Mahon |
