Wicklow Way Trail

7 (1,3,3) - Easy Terrain, >500M ascent, >10Km
(Old 22km course) Men: 01:32:20 (Barry Minnock, Rathfarnham WSAF) Women: 01:54:00 (Emma Sokell, Crusaders AC)
This is an extension of the old route. The race now starts near the lower Ballinastoe car park and joins the Wicklow Way in Ballinastoe forest near the old start point. The route no longer takes the short cut after crone woods up towards the An Oige Hostel, but instead remains on the Wicklow Way through the entire Glencree area. This has the affect of increasing the length of the race to about 25km, and adding about 200m of extra climb at the start.
A Google Earth KML file of the route is available here. If you have Google Earth installed on your computer you can download this file and use it to explore the route.
Please note that the entry fee for this race will be 20 Euros. If you have not run any other race this year then you will also have to pay the 10 Euro IMRA annual registration fee.
Registration for this race will be at the overflow carpark in Johhny Foxes pub. There will be no rgistration available at the race start itself. The cost of the event includes a contribution towards the hire of a bus from here to the race start (Which is why the Trail race is more expensive than the Ultra). In order to guarantee your seat on the bus please use the carpool booking system. You are not guaranteed a seat on the bus unless you do this.
There will be cut off times imposed for this race. These will be:
- Crone Woods Car Park: 14:45
- Curtlestown Car Park: 15:30

| Brendan Lawlor | Feb 10, 3:38PM | Eoin Could you confirm the exact location of the start of the WW trail race as there are a number of access points to Ballinastoe and hence 'lower Ballinastoe Forest' car parks Also, will entry to this event be restricted in any way? |
| Dermot Murphy | Feb 11, 9:21AM | Brendan, no restrictions in place for the Trail at the moment. We will be encouraging people to use the bus as much as possible - a facility to book a bus seat will be available soon. We will try to gauge the numbers for race based on the demand for bus seats - if its over subscribed, we may need to put restrictions in at that stage. Entry will be on the day. |
| Eoin Keith | Feb 11, 9:27AM | Brendan, The Start of the trail race, and the turn of the ultra race, are pinned (marked) on the google maps on the event page. It's essentially at the entrance where the mountain bike trails begin. If you switch to the satelite view of the google map the forest trails are pretty clear to see. I will change the main map to show the rough course of the new route(s), but if anyone happens to run/cycle it carrying a GPS tracker then it would be great to get the exact plot of the route. |
| Gary Condon | Feb 25, 10:26AM | If the starting point is along the WicklowWay, I'll have a track-log of it, along with elevation profile. I'll edit this later and send it. |
| diarmuid O'Colmain | Feb 25, 3:04PM | Gary curiously enough neither the start nor the finish of the Wicklow Trail race are on the Wicklow Way! See map in event details |
| Justin Rea | Feb 25, 10:41PM | The event page now has a carpool for the coach to the start. This is being provided by IMRA so as not to flood the car park at Ballinastoe. Note the registration for this race is at JFs and the best way to travel to the start is by coach. Get your places early at they always go quick. No need to confirm to my mobile. I'll send emails to all who book, and only those people will be allowed on the coach. |
| Gary Condon | Feb 26, 12:50PM | Hi Justin, I received two confirmation mails. I just want to make sure I don't have two seats allocated. Thanks! |
| Justin Rea | Mar 3, 11:13AM | Last few seats going quickly on the big coach. If you miss out, leave a message here and we will see if we can fill a smaller 38 seater as well. |
| Paul Cuffe | Mar 3, 3:13PM | Hi, Interested in a seat on the 38 seater. Thanks |
| Michael Maughan | Mar 3, 5:45PM | Hi, i'm interested in the 38 seater bus. Thanks. |
| Justin Rea | Mar 4, 9:46AM | I've added another 35 seats to the carpool for this event. Alpine Coach have committed to charging per seat, so we are now flexible with numbers. Please let me know if you are NOT going to run. We do not want to over-commit on the coach hire. |
| cormac o ceallaigh | Mar 5, 3:34PM | Hi Justin,can i book 2 seats for Niamh and myself.Thanks .cormac |
| Christian McAuley | Mar 5, 4:06PM | How do I cancel a seat I booked on the coach? |
| Justin Rea | Mar 6, 9:00AM | @Cormac use the carpool facility to book seats. You can book multiple times with the same email address, just put in different names for each booking. @Christian I'll take you off the list. Anyone else who is not running should email me to take their name off |
| Justin Rea | Mar 13, 10:21AM | Two full sized coaches are now booked to transport runners to the WW Trail start. If you are running this race please park in the overflow car park at Johnny Fox pub and catch the coach at 11am. Do not park at Ballinastoe as this will annoy the mountain bikers, and the local residents. Runners who have booked a place using the car pool get priority on seats. We are reaching maximum numbers that can be accommodated in this event, so your consideration in following the race instructions will ensure we are able to continue operating the race like any other run on the calendar. |
| Dermot Murphy | Mar 15, 9:12AM | Volunteers are required for the WW Trail and Ultra races. I need help with registration (can also run) and non running volunteers for help with the turn around at Ballinastoe woods, Crone wood and Curtlestown. Can anyone available to help out on the day please does by adding their name to list of volunteers or contacting me directly. |
| damian kelly | Mar 15, 7:21PM | Dermot I like to volunteer but also run in the trail. Thanks Damian |
| Bob Ingham | Today, 10:37 am | I'm planning to hire a car to get to Johnny Foxes for the start of the race. I will have two spare seats from city centre (City Hall) but have no means of getting either from Johnny Foxes to the start to pick up the car after the race or from Johnny Foxes to the start to begin the race because the coaches are full. Is there a solution? |
| niamh o ceallaigh | Today, 11:38 am | Hi Bob, I suspect that a few people who are booked on the bus might not turn up, so there should be room. If it turns out that there is not, I will happily drop you back to your car after the race. The people at registration will point me out to you as you may want to leave some warm clothes in my car for when you finish the race. Niamh O Ceallaigh |
