I've been told that hartails are good enough with double wall wheels and hydraulic disc brakes. Anything else i should be looking out for? Any of the above overkill for a newbie? Cheers |

Unless the course is really technical and/or you are doing a really loooong race (which I doubt as a newbie) then there is no need to go full suss. Get the lightest hartail you can afford. Hydraulic disc brakes are generally better than the older vee type that you might get if you buy a second hand bike but vee brakes are easier to maintain and work ok for most conditions you are likely to encounter. Get as light and as high a spec one that you reasonably afford and preferably one with a lockout facility on the front fork to reduce wasted energy whilst climbing and on road / non- bumpy fire trails. |

Good luck Ian |
