Look away now if you don't want to read about the CONNEMARA ADVENTURE CHALLENGE! On May 8th 2010 in the spectacular location of Connemara, Co. Galway the Connemara Adventure Challenge will take place. This adventure race around Connemara is 27 kilometers in total, and will be centered on three disciplines; trail/mountain running, kayaking and cycling. The challenge is designed to test you both physically and mentally but many simply see it as a bit of craic in stunning surroundings. Barnardos is the charity partner for this event. By taking part in this challenge, you can make a difference. You will challenge yourself in every way possible. But you will also be helping Barnardos to work through the challenges we face this year to keep their projects open and to deliver vital services to those who need them most. The challenge is open to racers of all levels and many who are planning to take part in the Gaelforce West in August will use the Connemara Adventure Challenge as a training event. There's more info here: http://www.gaelforceevents.com/connemara/ Or you can simply reply to this post if you have any questions. Thanks to Eoin Keith for giving me the go ahead for this post! Stage 1: Bog Run 4km The race starts with a 4km run through the Connemara bog! Stage 2: Mountain Climb 1km This is the mountain climb section. Competitors will climb up one of the foothills of the Maum Turks and we encourage you to take a rest at the top and take in the stunning views. Stage 3: Cycle 15km The cycling section takes in 2 types of terrain. The first 7km approx is over forestry tracks through Coillte forest coming out into the Inagh valley. The next 8km approx is on sealed roads, this is Connemara though so do not expect smooth flat pot hole free roads! Stage 4: Kayak 1km The kayaks will be 2 person sit on tops so grab a partner and take to the Killary Fjord. You will kayak approx 1km towards Leenane along the Galway shoreline. Stage 5: Run 6km There will be 2.5km approx road run from where you drop the kayaks to the beginning of a section of the Western Way. The final 3.5 km will take you along this trail to the finish line at Killary Adventure Centre. |
