Gavan DuffyMay 18 2018, 11:10pmHi, I’m thinking of going down the day before this run to camp with a tent. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions where to stay? Thanks Gavan
Robbie WilliamsMay 19 2018, 7:32pmHere you go:

Looking straight at the Galtees..

Gavan DuffyMay 19 2018, 10:33pmExcellent thanks Robbie! Ill head for there. Next question. I see it mentions that the route is not marked. Will it be a map and compass ( Navigational) open mountain run? Is there some hope for someone who is not familiar with the area? Thanks
Robbie WilliamsMay 19 2018, 11:49pmNavigation is defo needed

The points to hit will be on site

You need to be able to nav/or gpx file on watch is ok too

If it's clear it will make it much easier

Gavan DuffyMay 27 2018, 11:09pmDoes anyone have a gpx file of the route. I can upload it on the watch as backup. Thanks Gavan
Conor O'FarrellMay 30 2018, 3:43pmHi Gavan

Here's a rough(i.e use at your own risk :-| ) one I put together, based on the map on the event page. You should be able to download the GPX below the map somewhere: https://www.plotaroute.com/route/621303

Paddy O'SheaMay 30 2018, 6:18pmGavan,
I have a .gpx file of the crossing, it's the route the Galtee Walking Club take so it hits all the peaks. I don't know how to upload to the forum but email me at bearosheaatgmaildotcom and I'll forward to you.

zsolt szomjuJun 4 2018, 2:03pmHi,do we need to present map as paper form or on the phone or garmin is good enough?
Thanks for the answer.
All the BEST.
Zsolt
Patricia RyanJun 6 2018, 9:53amMap on paper. phone or Garmin is acceptable. Mandatory kit will be checked before boarding the bus.
Patricia RyanJun 7 2018, 3:51pm*Please note that following a discussion with the committee it has been decided that a map & compass will be mandatory as technology fails us from time to time.
Gordon PlaceJun 11 2018, 11:44amAnother camping option only 6 minutes from Cahir

http://www.theapplefarm.com/cider.htm

and you can fill your camelbak with Con's cider to keep you going for the day...
Patricia RyanJun 12 2018, 10:21amEntry is closing THIS Friday 15th June. Don't be disappointed, get your entry in now as late entries will NOT be accepted after this date.

Colin HalloranJun 15 2018, 12:53pmFor once I’m so organized I’m ahead of myself!!
Gavan DuffyJun 19 2018, 12:55pmHi Guys,

I had signed up for this run, but unfortunately, im not going to participate. I dont have enough running done in the legs to do it. Hope the day turns out well. Ill plan to do it next year.
Thanks Gavan
Paul SmythJun 19 2018, 1:38pmAm I correct in saying that only the mandatory control points have to be visited? Namely:

Galtymore (MANDATORY) Kite no.35
Galtybeg (R890-241) (MANDATORY) Kite no.34
Hammer head (S010-269) (MANDATORY) Kite no.39

I ask because it's a bit unusual to have control points marked by orienteering kites that are not mandatory and which don't have to be visited/punched. I suppose they could be of benefit to people to check their intermediate location if they're unsure where they are.
Paul SmythJun 19 2018, 1:43pmSorry, accidentally deleted one too many:

Galtymore (MANDATORY) Kite no.35
Galtybeg (R890-241) (MANDATORY) Kite no.34
Slieve an Airde (MANDATORY) Kite No.40
Hammer head (S010-269) (MANDATORY) Kite no.39
Patricia RyanJun 20 2018, 2:34pmThese are the MANDATORY checkpoints:
Templehill Kite no.34,
Galty Mor kite no.37
Galty Beag kite no.38
Slieve an Airde (fence) Kite no.76
Hammer Head Kite no.80

The rest are for guidance really & if anyone gets lost (please don't!) they can tell the RD which point they last passed to give a rough idea of where they are.
Paul SmythJun 20 2018, 9:41pmThanks Patricia. That makes everything clear.
Walsh RowanJun 22 2018, 12:28pmHi, any coordinates for Slieve an Airde fence or a photo. Many thanks.
Ian McHardyJun 22 2018, 3:18pmWas up there on Monday, the kite is attached to the fence on the south side of the big track that runs along the edge of the forestry, at 992-258, spot height 438.
Walsh RowanJun 22 2018, 4:11pmThank you very much Ian
Paddy O'SheaJun 24 2018, 9:08pmGreat run today, the crossing in 25C and higher, what a day. Big shout out to Trish Ryan and her band of helpers, cold Coke at the end was the cherry on top, only 364 sleeps to next year!

Jason DowlingJun 24 2018, 10:06pmBig thanks to Patricia and all her volunteers today for an amazing race across the Galtees. The after race grub and shower was amazing and the cold can of coke at the finish line was absolutely sublime :) A very well run race and was delighted afterwards that I made the effort to travel down to it.

Alan AylingJun 25 2018, 7:47amRace report up.
What a day! Legs are in a heap this morning!
Gordon PlaceJun 25 2018, 8:34amThanks Patricia and everyone for a lovely race.
Great report Alan. I was as surprised as you to pop out a little ahead, looking at Greg's flyby, it seems that last bit did it.
Gordon PlaceJun 25 2018, 8:34amStrava flyby that is!
Pádraig DoyleJun 25 2018, 1:15pmThanks to Patricia and the team for running a great race yesterday. The unexpected Pringles-stop (with life-saving water obvs.) and the unexpected icy-cold canna coke at the end. The bus, the showers, the grub; just a well put together day. Roll on next year.
Kevin MarnaneJun 25 2018, 2:05pmWhat a great day! Thanks to Patricia and her great crew! Between the lord of the oasis at hammerhead, and cold drinks being shoved into weary hands at the finish line and in the moat, we got the full five star pamper! Thanks all, you're great!

Alan's report is spot on, even at 23 places back!
David BarryJun 25 2018, 4:55pmJust looked at the linked photo associated with my participation in the Galtee Crossing yesterday. No offense to the lady in question but she's clearly not me.

Stephen GriffinJun 25 2018, 11:50pmThanks to the volunteers who waited for us to the end. Thanks Robert for the pringles and also to the lads at the finsh line for the most welcome ice cool can of coke. Great event ... hooked on mountains now.
