Wins for MacMahon and Donlon

The trials for the World and British and Irish under 17/20 championships were held in Crone Wood in good conditions. Five runners opened a lead on the run out along the Wicklow Way towards the open mountain. Brian MacMahon and James Kevan of Clonliffe were accompanied by Ian Conroy (Raheny Shamrock), Tom Hogan (SBR), and junior Killian Mooney (DSD). MacMahon waited until the last few kilometres before making a break for the finish. Conroy stayed close to him to finish 35 seconds behind with Kevan a further 40 seconds back in third. Killian Mooney ran an excellent race to finish as first junior and fourth overall – edging out Tom Hogan in a close finish. Des Kennedy was first master in 6th, 71 seconds behind Hogan and 11 seconds ahead of Brian Furey. Youth runner Tadgh McGinty ran a solid race in eight just ahead of Barry Minnock who is gradually returning to fitness. Emma Donlon was a clear winner of the women’s race ahead of Laura Shaughnessy and Catherine O’Connor who made the journey down from East Down.

Shane Bracken won the Youths race by 11 seconds from Oisin Donnelly with Matthew Molloy a further minute and 44 seconds behind. Aoife Mulroy continued her winning ways with a victory in the junior girls race ahead of the Flanagan twins from Omagh Harriers. Future star Josh Hogan finished 4th overall and first M14.
