2002 Races
Lugnaquilla race - Report by Douglas Barry
Robin Bryson, the record holder for the ascent of the Snowdon race, whose portfolio of achievement includes two tremendous fourth places in the World Mountain Running Championships proved that he is still one of the toughest runners on the block. The former winner of the International Matterhorn race had an easy win on the opening race of the Irish Championship up and down Lugnaquilla, Leinster's highest mountain at 3,039 feet.
Robin managed to pull out an impressive 4 and a half minute lead over another former Irish international Paul Nolan who had won a close Hell Fire Flicker race on Wednesday and who had a similar gap over northern runner Ivan Miller. In a woman free race, all other categories were won by males. Robin has just turned vet and the other vet categories went to Ercus Stewart (M50) and Mick Kellet (M60). The shorter junior course saw the win going to Brendan Dalton.
The Lugnaquilla race was also the first round in both the Leinster Championship and the uphill King of the Mountain Championships. So the Fermanagh fireman Robin Bryson now leads all three championships after just one race. In four weeks time, John Lenihan will be out on Carrauntoohil. He'll want his 15th win. Will Robin dampen his spark?
Women? What is it with them? All these guys lashing on the aftershave and no one there to impress....
