Donncha O'GradyDec 18 2012, 10:25amHi,

I am interested in getting started with mountain running and was wondering is there a club or groups that go training at weekends in Cork?

Also if anyone can let me know of any good routes to start out on that would be great?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Donncha

Come up to the Comeraghs, I'll go for a run with you on them hills any week :-)

Mark MorrisseyDec 19 2012, 6:23pmHi Donncha i actually asked the same question on this forum a couple of months ago.Theres no club in cork solely interested in mountain running. But the east cork ac do a hill training session on saturday mornings in walshtown woods outside midleton.I went a few times but unfortunetely the time didnt suit me so i do my own training now.
I did a few mountain races last year and plan on doing a lot more this year so if your interested in carpooling to some races next year let me know im going to try and do most of the munster races anyway my number is 0868906267.
Donncha O'GradyDec 20 2012, 7:22pmExcellent, thanks lads.

Pat,
I know Brian Flannelly from the TourDeMunster cycle so will look him up.

John,
Munster leagues sound good. Might take you up on a run up the Comeraghs. Will need to get back in shape first though!

Mark,
Carpooling would be handy. Will give you a buzz in the new year.

Thanks again guys and hopefully see you soon.

All the best,

Donncha

Ill get my partner to like the page so i can check it out.Im planning on doing the wicklow way trail race this year looking forward to 2013.
John KellyJan 5 2013, 9:45amDid a trsining run in currabinny woods yesterday. It was better than expected. Its not a large woods but its close to the city and there are loads of decent running paths. Nice views of Cork harbour too.
mark morrisseyJan 5 2013, 5:14pmCurrabinnys a great wood to run in ive done it a few times and you can mix it up with the various paths as well. The Glen park in the city is a great place for training runs as well ive run up to 13 miles looping the paths in the glen and theres some nice hills there as well.
I was checking out Coilltes trails in the Cork area on there website i came across about 10 different woodland trails that look like they would be great for running. If anyone is interested in getting together to check out the trails for training runs id be well up for it.
Bertie HarteJan 5 2013, 7:37pmI'm interested in this too.
I do a lot of running in the forestry near Banteer.
There's Mt. Hillary, which has an old downhill Mountain bike track and looped walks from 2-10km (all waymarked), or longer runs if you mix and match.
http://connect.garmin.com/course/755424

There is also a great 1 mile circuit of road/trail at Donoure Falls near kilcorney
http://connect.garmin.com/course/2451243
and a 4km loop at Shronebehe
http://connect.garmin.com/course/2451212 (ignore the GPS drift on map, signal took ages to lock)

For a longer run there is a section of The Blackwater way from Bweeng, it is very wet in places.:
http://www.walkingroutes.ie/1469-Bweeng-to-Mushera-%28Blackwater-Way%29.html

Also, I'm originally from Currabinny, the woods are great.

Hope to do some of the midweek Munster runs later in the year.

I'm planning a trip to the glen of Aherlow on Wednesday morning if anyone wants to car-pool from Mallow 10-20km run depending on the weather, no set route yet.

Bertie

mark morrisseyJan 5 2013, 8:03pmHi Bertie im actually off work wednesday morning what time are you planning on going to the glen of aherlow?Im living in Ballyvolane so i could meet you somewhere in Mallow no probs.Ive been planning on going up there for a run so this would be the perfect oppurtunity.
Bertie HarteJan 5 2013, 8:14pmI'm off work all day Wednesday. Anytime suits me how about 09:30 to give the school run traffic in Mallow a chance to clear.
Earlier if you want.
Forecast looking okay too.

Mark MorrisseyJan 6 2013, 4:48pmHi Bertie i sent you on an email there with my details talk to ya later.
Pat barryJan 7 2013, 8:56amDoes somebody have a suggested route say 10 miles(ish) in the Glen of Aherlow. My parents live near Thurles and when back in Ireland it would be a nice place for a run.
Seán HarteJan 7 2013, 12:28pmGreat to see the interest in mountain running in Cork! The details of the Munster League series of races for this year are currently being finalized and is planned to have a route on Mt. Hillary and possibly in the Nagle Mountains too, to go along with the existing Cork based race up Claragh Mountain in the Munster Championship. Full details should be on this site by the end of the month.

Another option to find out about places for off-road running is to check out the list of events on <a href="http://www.orienteering.ie/">orienteering.ie</a>. Some nice running to be had in Tracton and Curragh woods for example.

Pat, there's a map of marked trails on Slievenamuc on the Coillte site here:
<a href="http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie/?id=53&rec_site=140">Bansha</a> and <a href="http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie/?id=53&rec_site=141">Gortavoher</a>. Other options are up the Galtees, but would require a map and compass. From Thurles you could also have a look at the areas used for the Munster Wednesday League series such as Murroe and Keeper Hill, and also check out <a href="http://www.shannonregiontrails.ie/">shannonregiontrails.ie</a>
Bertie HarteJan 7 2013, 2:03pmI did two of the loops down there on Sunday.
The Millennium Stone loop is great, some nice single-track sections heading over the highest point. (Blue loop from Statue)
Map Here:
http://walkingroutes.ie/1477-Aherlow-Millenium-Stone-Loop.html

The Ballinacourty loop is okay, a bit too much forest track for my liking but a good run: (Purple loop from the trail head at the far end of carpark near statue)
Map Here:
http://walkingroutes.ie/1478-Aherlow-Ballinacourty-Loop.html

Both start from the same location so combine both for a 10mile ish run.

There is a longer run extending out from the Ballinacourty loop to the Dolmen loop but I haven't mapped it yet and I'm not sure if the marker post are set up to allow reverse running of the loop.

Bertie
