Kerry Weekend 2014

AuthorDateMessage
Rene BorgDec 6 2013, 1:02pmhi all, we have decided to run the Kerry weekend for another year and return to Dingle after last year's successful trip there.

However, current feedback tells me to move it back to the Easter weekend (rather than the St Pat's weekend as 2013). Can anyone in IMRA confirm whether there are races planned over that weekend. Ideally we hope to place this weekend so it does not clash with major IMRA events.

For those who don't know the weekend, check out last year's schedule:

At this point the Brandon Mountain traverse is the only definitive fixture with the rest of the itinerary to be defined. There'll be a few changes to keep things fresh.
Rachel CinnsealachDec 6 2013, 5:26pmRene, We will have your w/e as the event over Easter and it won't clash with any big races :)

Looking forward to it already :)

Rach

Ps I'm all on for the faha ridge again!
Brian O MurchuDec 6 2013, 11:14pmCanary Islands for Paddys weekend?
Conor MurphyDec 11 2013, 11:13amWill call over for at least some of it, based in Kerry anyway.

Ye go over the top of the Faha Ridge or by the Pilgrim's Path that leads up to the paternoster lakes under the ridge? That's about as airy as ridges get, more so then the Big Gun or Beenkeragh in the Reeks.
Rene BorgDec 11 2013, 11:58amHi Conor, we want the Pilgrim's Path last year to see the Lakes. For a bigger group it's probably the better route again this year but Paul Daly and Rachel C. took the Faha Ridge all the way and got some spectacular photos, so I'm not dead-set either way yet. We'll make a call closer to the time.
Rene BorgDec 11 2013, 12:03pmA none "point to point" route could do a tear-drop shaped ascent of the ridge, go to the top and come back the Pilgrim's path. Another interesting option. Philip Brennan also recommended the longer ascent from Conor Pass taking in Brandon Peak and Brandon South Top. Another route we played with (for the second day) was the Dingle Way section at Masatiompan with a detour to the top but we are trying to get the balance right so the runs are not too similar. Any local suggestions always very welcome!

There's not enough days to give Brandon the attention it needs really!
Conor MurphyDec 11 2013, 12:24pmThe Faha Ridge is fantastic, but caution needed when coming down from the highest point as there are one or two places where a person could pitch forward off the north side of the ridge and there have been some serious falls there - the sections are obvious to the right of the centre of the pic below. Plus there is a band of rock that has to be gone around rather than over at one part, the lowest point on the right to the right of the steps mentioned above.

There was a walk started this year that might be interesting, called the Tom Crean Endurance Walk that goes up the Pilgrims Path under the Faha Ridge, and then follows the Brandon Range across 27km with 1750m of ascent, across the Connor Pass and on to the Central Dingle range, ending at Annascaul lake. However it isn't a circuit.

Conor MurphyDec 11 2013, 12:25pmSorry, meant to say of course that the walk provides an interesting route, rather than suggesting everyone slow down and put on hiking boots!
Rene BorgFeb 19 2014, 2:47pmBumping this up into 2014! The (evolving) itinerary is here and assumes pretty similar activities as last year and we are hoping to secure the same accommodation:

http://www.championseverywhere.com/mountain-running-training-camp-kerry-weekend-2014

You can fill out the registration link directly at SurveyMonkey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YJTRVDT

Once we have confirmed accommodation, we can confirm price with everyone and only then do you need to transfer the cost. Please note that the €75 stated in the survey is an estimate - it could be a bit more or a bit less. We only know once every booking is made (accommodation, electricity and buses).

At the moment we have 18 people who have registered there interest and the very maximum we can facilitate is usually between 25-35. After that anyone who wishes to participate will need to book separate accommodation and then let me know if they wish to be on the buses.

Hope to see there again!
Donagh McGrathMar 13 2014, 11:24amI will probably be in Kerry that weekend anyway - is it OK to just rock-up for one (or more) of the runs & pay a fiver (or whatever) for the bus to the bottom of Brandon
Rene BorgMar 13 2014, 11:44amHi Donagh, there is no problem joining us but if you need to use the bus we will need to know that you are coming and that there is enough space on the bus. When we've confirmed the exact plans let us know then if you are coming.

For anyone who is wondering why its taken so long to finalise the details, we've been waiting for the price of the accommodation to fall (it usually does at a certain time out from the weekend). I'm beginning to think it isn't going to happen for this Easter and as accommodation is limited in Dingle, we may have to go ahead and book at a slightly more expensive rate than usual.
Rene BorgApr 9 2014, 5:04pmOk, all spaces for this years Kerry Weekend are now locked down and accommodation booked, so we will not be able to accommodate any further additions to the houses but if anyone is in the area and wants to join for the runs and sort out their own accommodation - just mail me on rene@championseverywhere.com

We're still working on the routes with 'our consultant' Philip Brennan. Routes will be slightly hillier on both days but with overall less mileage than previous years - if we get good weather it should be spectacular.
Rene BorgApr 15 2014, 9:00pmAll details confirmed - 20 'IMRAlites' will be travelling down to Kerry, we've got a few people doing the Good Friday 5 mile on Friday (duh) before a few cracking routes 'Conor Pass to Brandon Point' over the Mt. Brandon ridge (with a detour to Masatiompan for the hares) and a horseshoe from Dunquin over Mt. Eagle to relax us on Sunday.

Full details and TrailZilla maps are online now: http://www.championseverywhere.com/mountain-running-training-camp-kerry-weekend-2014

I know we have a few people not in the houses that are going to meet up with us - if you are considering that just meet us at the starting point for each route. If you want to join in on the bus on the saturday (as it is point to point) email me at rene@championseverywhere.com so we can ensure there is enough space on the bus which is currently booked for 20 and chock-full!
Rachel CinnsealachApr 22 2014, 2:21pmBrilliant weekend in Dingle organised by Rene Borg Aoife Joyce and Jason Kehoe!!! The 22 km run over the ridge (including Brandon) was amazing! The most stunning scenary I have ever seen! Sundays run was an 11 km hill run up Mt Eagle, with 500 m climb. Once again amazing scenary. Each morning we did about an hour of stretching and core work. Everything was optional, with people opting out of different activities. There was about 20 of us down in Dingle in total. There was all different standands of runners there and something to suit everyone. A very socable w/e, with meals out and drinks in Dingle afterwards. Thanks folk's for organising.
