Wednesday Night Trail Kids Sessions

AuthorDateMessage
Jeff FitzsimonsJun 4 2017, 6:47amIMRA and Trail Kids are launching a new and exciting initiative to help parents share the joy of hill running with their kids (and sneak in a race while the kids learn trail running skills through adventure and play).

These events will take place on Wednesday June 14th (Djouce), Wednesday June 28th (Tibradden) and Wednesday July 12 (Bray)

On each of the Wednesday evenings listed above IMRA will be hosting a fun run for the little ones aged 5 and up at 7pm. The loop will be approx. 1000m in length, where possible. Parents or guardians must run the loop with their kids, a max of 2 loops will be run with the intention that all parents are done in time to run the main race at 7:30. There will be no fee for this fun run.

For the older kids IMRA will have a short course available on all of these nights.

Following the fun run Trail Kids (www.trailkids.ie or https://www.facebook.com/trailkids.ie for further info) will be in attendance to host a session that will loosely follow the format below.

The cost of this session will be €7 per child and this payment is made directly to Trail Kids, pre booking will be essential to guarantee the place and can be done at www.trailkids.ie/imra

What's involved in a trail kids session?

Trail Kids’ solution is to take adventure to children and teenager’s physical activity – trail running based sessions in the woods.

They incorporate skills from a variety of resources e.g. map-reading, athletics, gymnastics, team-based sports, slack-lining and ninja training; developing children’s fundamental movement skills through play-based activities while concurrently improving their aerobic fitness levels.

Sessions are based around the primary reason kids move - FUN. They encourage movement and physical activity that is child-led. Children have an input into session design and leading the session. This enables them to develop an ownership of the sessions, increasing their self confidence levels.

What does the structure of a session look like?

10 - 15 mins - Working in the ‘PlayStation’ - slackline/ninjaline set up working on some fun skills!

10 - 15 mins - Games based around search and discovery.

30 - 60 mins - Working on the trails - Usually using 2-4km (depending on ability of the group) of trails working on technical patterns emphasising key components e.g. maintaining balance, speed, control while moving uphill, downhill and on cambers. Here the children can have inputs into where they go, how they get there (within reason!!)

10 - 15 mins - Return to ‘PlayStation’

Each session there will be 2 Trail Kids leaders, one at the front of the group, and one at the rear in communication via radio.
Kevin D O'BrienJun 12 2017, 10:02pmWe've 8 spaces left for the Trail Kids session at Djouce Woods Wednesday evening... Hopefully we can fill it up and get a good gang of kids out on the trails! Good mix so far of 5-12 yrs. We won't be taking any kids that are not pre-registered with us beforehand - at https://trail-kids.class4kids.ie/info/26

If you have a niece/nephew/grandchild you'd like to introduce to trail running, bring them along!

Don't worry if you're not back within the hour (it looks an interesting route!), we will do well to finish bang on the hour. We'll wait at our 'Playstation' with the kids until the parents arrive back.

Please make sure they have a rain jacket and some water with them!
Kevin D O'BrienJun 13 2017, 10:29pmHappy to say, session is fully booked! Looking forward to seeing them all there tomorrow evening.
Jeff FitzsimonsJun 13 2017, 11:53pmGreat news!

Looking forward to seeing the next generation of mountain runner strut their stuff while their folks take on Djouce.
Jeff FitzsimonsJun 25 2017, 1:55pmThe next Trail Kids session is this Wednesday at Tibradden. The first week at Djouce was a great success with lots 9f smiling faces of both parents and kids.

Book early if you want to be sure of a place.
Tanya SheridanJun 27 2017, 7:13pmJust a reminder to the parents coming to the trail kids session tomorrow to please carpool as much as you can (also possibly from Buglers carpark) as car parking spaces will be really tight.

Thanks, Tanya
