Run the Ridge 2018

Rene BorgJun 27 2018, 10:38amFirst of all thanks to the IMRA Committee for allowing me to share this here.

Glendalough AC and Laragh GFC would like to invite every interested runner to the Cullen Cup 2018 - a memorial sport's day held in the honour of David Cullen who sadly passed away on the Laragh GAA grounds 20 years ago.

This year our club fund-raiser - the Run the Ridge 20 km and 8 km races - will be held in conjunction with the sports day - moving the event to 18th of August instead of the traditional mid-October date. This is the third running of this event.

We will have various other competitions in place including kids races on trail and grass track, 'fittest family' and, organiser's time permitting, senior grass track races from 100m to 1500m.

THE ROUTE

Both events start and begin on the Laragh GAA grounds with the 20 km route following a long ascent on the 'Orange Road', joining with the Wicklow Way and then emerging for the highlight of the course - the full traverse of the Derrybawn Ridge and descent back down through Derrybawn Woods.

The 8 km course is a suitable beginners course or would suit a fast trail runner - while short, the two climbs are testing. The 20 km course is an excellent testing ground for anyone who needs to be strong for long climbs - while gradual and with 'short descents' the majority of the first 11 km are net uphill.

Both courses finish with a 700m lap of the GAA grounds and will be extensively marked so prior route knowledge is not necessary. Chip-timing, race number, parking, and plentiful goodies and water for after as well as prizes for top-3 finishers are included in the price. The winners will also receive a stone trophy designed by long-standing IMRA member Richard Healy. A bonus prize for course records will be available (more info later).

The main goal is to raise funds for Laragh GFC and Glendalough AC. Several experienced IMRA members are involved in the organisation so you should be in good hands. Since our foundation in 2014, our club has brought over 30 juniors into the sport of running so your support of this event is a support of the continued development of our sport in the valley. We hope to give you a brilliant day in return with a warm Laragh welcome.

While our 'super early bird' price has unfortunately flown the nest already, an early bird is in place until 1st of July. You will be able to register at the normal price after that - including on the day.

Rene BorgAug 17 2018, 11:43amRegistration for this year's Run the Ridge closes online in the next few hours and will re-open for 'on the day' registrations tomorrow on the Laragh GFC pitches from 11 am.

We look forward to welcoming those running to what looks like being a dry day (unlike today!) on Derrybawn.

The course is a hybrid race with a long climb on trail, an open mountain section on Derrybawn, a finish on mixed trail and a lap of the GAA pitches to finish! This will be the last chance to run the 8 km course which will be replaced with a 10 km version in 2019.

Rene BorgNov 7 2018, 7:43pmMyself and a few Glendalough AC members will run over the Run the Ridge long course on Sunday - we start 9 am at the Laragh GAA grounds. The run will be about 19 km as we leave out the part that is on the pitches. Any IMRA members who want to have a look are very welcome to join us as long as you'll be well within your limits with the run.
Alan ConnollyNov 7 2018, 10:37pmHi Rene
What kind of pace ?
Cheers alan
Rene BorgNov 8 2018, 2:38pmNot 100% sure Alan as it depends a bit on how tired folks are after Saturday's training :) But I was estimating 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 minutes at the slowest.
Kevin O'RiordanNov 8 2018, 3:24pmWill be recovering after Run the line that day but interested in future group runs if you guys are planning any more.
Rene BorgNov 10 2018, 9:50pmSmall change: we'll start from Laragh village instead of the official start at Laragh GAA as the grounds are currently locked due to recent vandalism.

contact me in advance in arriving tomorrow, so we can be sure to catch you. There's a lot of parking restrictions in place in Laragh now on Sundays (no leaving cars at Lynhams or the Heather most days), so find any suitable spot around the village and look for runners around.
