Wicklow Round attempt

AuthorDateMessage
Paddy O'LearyApr 11 2019, 11:10amHi lads,

Just giving the official notice of my attempt at the Wicklow Round this Saturday, April 13th. My name is Paddy O'Leary, a Wexford man based in the US. I've been able to join a couple of the IMRA races over the past few years when I'm back on the holidays, but very excited to have a right suffering day over the rest of the mountains on the Round.

We're aiming to start at 4AM Saturday, and I have the Committee's tracker link sorted (http://live.primaltracking.com/wicklowround19/).

Hope to see some of yas out there, and hopefully at the Glacier Lakes on Sunday. If I'm not still lost out in the hills. Will have some friends in a big yellow VW van crewing at the road crossings, so say hello if you're about.

Cheers,

Paddy
Eoin KeithApr 11 2019, 11:25amThis should be something special. For those who don't know Paddy is probably the fastest Irish ultra runner right now. He has a string of impressive race results from around the world, including the top Irish performance at the most recent Ultra Trail World Championships. He jogged out a 2:20 marathon in California in the last year, just to give an idea of how fast he is.

Best of luck Paddy! Hopefully the weather is co-operative.
John MurrayApr 11 2019, 11:27amWhat a way to kick off Round Season! Will be out there cheering you on Paddy!

Best of luck!
Warren SwordsApr 11 2019, 11:35amBest of lucky Paddy!
Paddy O'LearyApr 11 2019, 11:37amAh thanks for the kind words, Eoin. We'll see how that road marathon translates to tumbling down through the heather off Tonduff hah. Hopefully my first 18 years of traipsing through the bogs of Bree searching for stray heifers will stand to me on the day.
Brian KitsonApr 11 2019, 11:49amBest of luck Paddy. The forecast looks OK. Enjoy the adventure of it.
Graham K. BusheApr 11 2019, 12:56pmBest of luck Paddy! I hope all goes smoothly for you.
Mick HanneyApr 11 2019, 6:36pmBest wishes Paddy. See you at some stage during the day.
Shane LynchApr 11 2019, 7:41pmVery best of luck with it! I’ll be following with interest. Hopefully it goes without hiccup.
Adrian HennessyApr 11 2019, 10:19pmGood luck Paddy! Enjoy the day out.
John MollohanApr 11 2019, 11:29pmBest of luck Paddy, wishing you the best of weather and fortune. Lean ar adhaigh!
Mike JordanApr 12 2019, 9:39amGood luck Paddy! Maike's hoping to catch you out there at some stage. Go n-éirí an bóthar leat.
Tanya SheridanApr 12 2019, 10:28amGood luck Paddy ... I will be following your progress around and wishing you the best! Nár laga Dia tu.
Joe McConaughyApr 13 2019, 9:08amAnyone know his exact start time??
Mick HanneyApr 13 2019, 6:12pmPaddy is motoring through this by the looks of it. Conditions were far from ideal on Lugnacoille earlier but he seems to be gaining in momentum as the day is going on. Just needs to close it out. Good to see Joe supporting and dot watching like the rest of us.
David LenahanApr 13 2019, 8:10pmThanks for the updates guys. Best of luck Paddy..
Graham K. BusheApr 13 2019, 8:26pmLooks like that 2:20 Road marathon translated very well :)
Super running Paddy
Mick HanneyApr 13 2019, 8:44pmFantastic achievement. Well done Paddy. All that homework and nav practice paid off. Super crew helping in the background too. Enjoy and rest well down in Kerry next week.
Rachel CinnsealachApr 13 2019, 8:50pmWell done, Amazing.
Brian KitsonApr 13 2019, 8:51pmThat is a simply stunning achievement Paddy. Fast and flawless navigation.

Each time a Round record is set I think it will hardly be broken but surely this is one that will surely stand for some time to come.

It was great to see you on Lugalla earlier, even if you were just a blur flying past myself and the dog.
Paddy O'LearyApr 14 2019, 9:57amThanks for all of the support, everyone. Had a great crew volunteering to help at the road crossings, cheering along the way and following online. Means a huge amount. It was especially great to have Joe's support and him keeping everyone up to data on the split differences. The trail running community is something else!

@Brian Kitson, flawless navigation? You might not say that if you saw me bushwhacking through the forestry when I missed the boardwalk to Drumgoff, or hopping the two 8ft forestry fences coming down to Ballinagee Bridge. Cut to several hours later, and I was cramping hopping a 3ft sheep fence below Scarr. Lucky I got the big fence of the way when I was fresh.
Mike JordanApr 14 2019, 10:09amWell done Paddy in very windy weather!
What was the time in the end? (I don't trust the tracker)
Paddy O'LearyApr 14 2019, 12:52pmI clocked 16:27:20 on the Casio. Recorded a rough summit time at each one:

East Top/Stony Top 6:11

Camaderry 13:21
Tonelagee 14:21
Scarr 15:22
Knocknacloghoge 16:22

Though I dropped my Ballinagee-Carrawaystick card somewhere in a bushwhack to Drumgoff, but had remembered how far ahead/behind the goal times I had printed in my pocket
Jason KehoeApr 15 2019, 3:41pmReally a great achievement and in such tough conditions. The insta stories and commentary are classic and enough to ground anyone who may get notions! And I may as well say it if nobody else will, it's good to have the record back in the hands of an Irishman! ;)

Well done!
