Mountain Meitheal Handicap - Glenmacnass

AuthorDateMessage
Joe LalorAug 1 2019, 8:33amGood morning folks, once again the IMRA committee has generously agreed to donate the takings of the end of league handicap race to Mountain Meitheal, the group that builds and repairs the foot paths we all love to run on.

We have a new route this year. It is a little further down in Wicklow with a circuit around Lough Ouler on the slopes of Tonlegee, starting from Glenmacnass waterfall car park. If we get fine weather it will be a lovely route.

As in previous years the voucher scheme for this race will be suspended and the only way to enter will be online for a fee of €10. The purpose of this race is to find the handicap winner of the summer league. Start times based on your finish position in the league will be published a few days before the race (start times at 7 for the slowest and at 7.30 for the elite runners).
To get a handicap starts time you will need to have completed 7 races in the series but everyone else is very welcome to take part starting at 7.30. I hope as many as possible of you will support this worthy cause and if you cannot make it on the night you might consider buying an entry anyway as a contribution.
Entry has been added to Purchase IMRA Products for those who want to run and those wishing to donate to Mountain Meitheal fund.

Many thanks.
John J BarryAug 1 2019, 11:16amJoe,

A great route choice. Never did that in full as described here. looking forward to it.

The event details say prize giving in Lynams Laragh. Are you sure about that? Seems a long way in the wrong direction for the Dublin based people...
Andrew HanneyAug 1 2019, 12:04pmLooking forward to running that route.
Joe LalorAug 2 2019, 12:33pmThanks to all the volunteers, still need a laptop operator and two willing to marshall out on course.
Re post venue, Lynams by far the nearest pub and via Laragh arguably the quickest way back to M50 though not the shortest.
Alan AylingAug 2 2019, 2:03pmI put myself down as a Helper Joe, happy to do course marshal.
Joe LalorAug 2 2019, 2:08pmThanks Alan, will put you down as turabout marshall. At the top of the corrie not quite as far back as the summit cairn.
Ross FitzgeraldAug 5 2019, 9:27amHi Joe, happy to help out as second course marshal if you want to stick me down for that
Joe LalorAug 5 2019, 2:56pmThanks Ross, that's great.
Anyone for laptop?
Phil behanAug 6 2019, 5:00pmHi all, is it 7 races across the Trail League and Leinster leauge? Or is it 7 just across the lenister league only. Thanks. P
Gordon PlaceAug 6 2019, 5:59pmThe Leinster league I think Phil, going on last year anyway
Joe LalorAug 6 2019, 8:11pmYes, it is 7 races in the summer league. This hadicap race to find the hadicap winner of the league has been on the go for the best part of 30 years. The trail league is a relatively new invension and is only in its second year of being held before the summer league. However tomorrow weeks race is open to all, but only 7 finishers will get a hadicap start and be eligble for a prize.

It is a new exciting route and should be enjoyable if the weather co-operates
Jenny Uí ShéAug 7 2019, 1:43pmHi Joe will there be a j14 race at the Meitheal?
Jenny
Joe LalorAug 7 2019, 3:47pmPlanning on having a Junior/Short course out and back by same route to Lough Ouler but this is dependant on the state of the river. A call on this will not be made until the day of the race. There will be no under 10 race because of the river crossing in any event.
Warren SwordsAug 7 2019, 9:29pmI know it’s a bit early for results but anyone know how Barry Murray did? Didn’t see him myself. Either did Mikey or John.
Joe LalorAug 9 2019, 5:54pm40 entries have been made for this race already, 28 of these qualify for a hadicap start. See below for your start time.
Note that if you have not completed 7 races in the LL you start with the last runner(7.28 at the moment). The expected quickest running time for the 7.5km course is about 30 mins, and slowest around 60 mins.

When considering your start time these are based on your finishing position in the LL. There could have been stronger runners than you returning from injury or runners who only did 7 races so did not loose their diaster runs, so be kind to the hanicapper.

Joe LalorAug 11 2019, 3:53pmThanks to all of you who have vollunteered for this event.
I have loads now, no need for any more with the exception of a lap top operator.
Vollunteers will receive an email shortly outlining roles.
Mick HanneyAug 11 2019, 5:01pmJoe - Ive added my name for laptop. I'm not familiar with using the chip system but someone experienced may be on hand to show me And / Or, given low numbers it might not be needed in this race?
Joe LalorAug 11 2019, 5:21pmThanks,Mick. Since there will be individual starts we are not using chips. Lap top use will involve entering runners and recording finish.
Joe LalorAug 11 2019, 10:27pmJenny could you contact me at jlalor(at)eircom.net re Arrons entry

Ronan MotyerAug 14 2019, 12:35amHi there,
Is it too late to register for the race? Unfortunately it seems I've missed the pre-registration : (
Joe LalorAug 14 2019, 8:36amEveryone should have their start time now. handicap based solely on your finish position in LL.

See below for a few earlier posts worth repeting.

Also STAY AWAY FROM THE WATERFALL.

Safety Notice

Please note race finish is on high ground above southside of river. This is for safety reasons. Drop to river is over steep rough ground with several holes and is not suitable for sprint finishes. The route to the finish is very runnable.

Conor O'FarrellAug 14 2019, 9:35amHi All

Please remember to bring your chip this evening. Regardless of the fact that we are not using chip-timing this evening, we still are still using the chip for race registration as we will still be using the laptop to record positions and times.

Thanks

Gordon PlaceAug 14 2019, 1:56pmHi Conor, Joe,
I'd already left for the day with my gear packed before I saw your message, not sure I threw in the chip as had seen Joe's earlier comment and never thought of needing it for sign in. Can I be let off this time? I'll be good in future
Siobhán LyonsAug 14 2019, 2:18pmThanks for map link Mikey, was the Jellies message for me too?!?
Jean O'NeillAug 14 2019, 3:58pmCan someone pick me up at Plucks in Kilmac? I have a lift not confirmed. I should be there by 5.15 and will have a cup of coffee there. Check am I still there when you pass? Thanks
John J BarryAug 14 2019, 10:36pmWell done to Joe and his team on tonight's event. Good call on the literally last minute change of route. Well done to Alan to chase up the mountain with the lead group and marking the route just ahead of them as he went along. Also to Mike for getting to the Kantuck junction to guide us in the right direction up and down..
Joe LalorAug 14 2019, 11:05pm110 persons bought an entry for this race in support of MM, many thanks. Most of these braved the elements and actually ran the race.

A big thanks you to my large team of helpers who had not only to contend with one change of route but two, one of which was 4 mins before the off. A special thanks to Mike Jordan who defaulted on his race to run ahead of the runners with a roll of tape

Even though the eventual route didnt have a river crossing I am told two runners managed to fall into the Glenmacmass river

The results which will be published in the database are timed from 7.00 to reflect the handicap nature of the event. To qualify for a handicapped start you would have to have done 7 LL races (this does not include the pre season trail league). Handicapping over such a long league is not an exact science and tonight was further complicated by the route being shorter than planned, the speedier runners at the back never had a chance.I will post a running time taken set of results in a few days just for reference.
Brendan LawlorAug 15 2019, 8:05amTough evening at the office for the unflappable Joe Lalor and his hardy team of volunteers.. well done and thank you all, especially poor Mikey Fry who spent three hours marking up to Tonelagee and Alan Ayling who was half way up to said peak before being called back and hooshed up to Scarr.

Some spread back in the car park too .. yum!

Next up for the Wednesday's is Mike Jordan's Mountain Rescue race and the sad end to Wednesday racing for another year.. see you there!

And remember if you can't come next Wednesday but want to make a donation, just sign up online and stay at home, feeling a)very smug if its lashing rain b) very guilty if its a grand evening
Conor O'FarrellAug 15 2019, 10:34amHi All

I've posted the tesults up. Please note that the times and order of people are those of when you crossed the timing mat. A big thanks to Mick for taking on the laptop, being completely new to the new system.

Any queries to results@imra.ie

Neil DowlingAug 15 2019, 11:32amThanks to everyone for a very enjoyable race last night.

Apologies to the other runner that I bumped into near the finish. It wasn’t the terrain for a sprint finish and momentum and an unexpected turn got the better of me. I won’t push it so much next time.

Nora LalorAug 15 2019, 12:52pmThanks to everyone who helped with the catering last night, Brenda,Mandy,Siobhan, Danielle for bringing stove & kettle,Vivian for the flasks. The real hero of the hour was Conor who brought sides for the Gazebo which was ineffective in the side wind, we just put up 1 easily with the strong Velcro, which was fantastic, sheltered us all, kept the computer & sign in sheets dry & from blowing away. It also let us use the stoves to boil the kettles for tea & coffee. Thankfully the rain stopped & we were able to spread the picnic out in car park. What looked like a disaster at 5.30 turned out all right on the night albeit on plan C! Surprised how many runners were never at Glendasan before or had gone up Scarr from that side, the waterfall in full flow an added visual bonus.
Conor O'FarrellAug 15 2019, 2:59pmOK, just for fun, here's the difference between how people started and finished. Hats off to Kevin Glennon gained a whopping 41 places:

Joe LalorAug 15 2019, 4:51pmDistance last night was about 5.5km.
Stepping stones over the river were 6 inches clear of the water and dry at 10 this morning. What goes up must come down.
