Brendan LawlorMay 22 2024, 9:49amThe Interceltique 26km race is the showpiece event of a fantastic weekend festival of Trail and Mountain running held in Guerledan in the centre of Brittany each May.

The full programme of races includes:

-Fille de forges 8km Womens race (200 participants)

-Le trail de Liscuis 13km race (600 participants)

-L’interceltique 26km race (800 participants)

-Le trail des Ardoisières -36km race (900 participants)

- Le trail de Guerledan – 65 km race (1200 participants)

There were also some short kids races and a great festival atmosphere at the finish line.

Like our own Brockagh race, these open races sell out in double quick time, less than an hour this year, so I was told. Trail and mountain running is now extremely popular in France as elsewhere.

The festival is organised by an amazing committee of volunteers led by the very formidable Jean-Claude Nivet. Jean Claude is a combination of Robbie Williams, Eoin Flynn and Lillian Deegan.. one minute he is organising and commentating on a race start, next minute he is at the finish line handing out prizes, next minute he is assisting the international delegations with their food and accomodation and then before you know it he is standing on a table at the after race party leading us all in a rousing rendition of the Cranberries rugby anthem ‘ Zombie’ !

The Interceltique race is a 26km race along the beautiful trails beside Lac du Guerledan. The international event is a race within a race with teams invited from all the Celtic nations (Ireland, Brittany, Wales, Cornwall, Galicia and Portugal attended this year) which started on Saturday at 3pm.

Our trip over was quiet fraught as there had been a fatal accident on the M50 just before our check in time on Friday. Luckily we all made it. We discovered that Cornwall's hire car had broken down (6 hour delay) and Galacia's flight was 2 hours late so we weren't on our own with logistics challenges.

The race itself was a very exciting affair with Nick Hogan and Jan Corcoran leading home our mens and womens teams. All our athletes ran well with no issues and those who had run before improved their times by several minutes. Our team was 5th overall. The team competition is a combination of the mens and womens results. The support from locals and others all along the route was fantastic with plenty of cow bells, 'allez, allez, allez' and regular food and water stations.

Below are selected results from the Interceltic race. You will find full race results if you Google 'Trail du Guerledan race results 2024' and full information on all the races can be found on the Trail du Guerledan website and Facebook page. Anyone thinking of going to run in any of the races next year should definitely head over and please get in contact if you need any more information

We acquitted ourselves well at the after race party as well with several of the other delegations wanting to come to Ireland to race and keep the Celtic party going. Hopefully we will see some of them at one of our races in the not too distant future.

Finally a few words of thanks:

-to the legend that is Leo Mahon for organising our flights, liaising with Jean-Claude and providing great advice and help to me as team manager

-to Miriam Maher for sorting out our AAI race kit

-to Robbie Williams and the high performance committee for selecting the teams and lots of other work in the background

A l'annee prochaine ! A Annecy ! Allez les Verts !
