Kippure Handicap Race

Forum Messages

AuthorDateMessage
Peter O'FarrellJul 15 2008, 3:54pmPaul Mahon has kindly volunteered to organise this race. He will be available for "adjustment" of your handicap at the BBQ tomorrow and I believe he enjoys Guinness...
More usefully, there are a huge amount of volunteers down for the Sugarloaf race and it would be helpful if some of you can earn your end of league prize by volunteering for the Kippure handicap instead. It WILL count towards your volunteering requirement.

kind regards,
Peter O'Farrell
Emma WalshJul 17 2008, 9:29amRachel,

As I was saying last night you can count me in to volunteer for Kippure. If at all possible I would also like to run the race. Let me know what time you need me down there at.

Thanks

Emma

Paul MorrisseyJul 21 2008, 12:17pmAre there any details of the race route around?
Rene BorgJul 21 2008, 12:28pmHi Paul, it's straight up and down Kippure (a marshal will stand at the mast).

You can't really go wrong on this one as there's practically a canyon up after the road stops, and it will be fully marked.

We don't currently have a map of the route, but I'll try to see if we can get one.
Vincent O' SullivanJul 21 2008, 1:50pmThe smart money is on Keith Daly!
Paul MorrisseyJul 21 2008, 2:04pmAre there any details of the race route around?
Paul MorrisseyJul 21 2008, 2:07pmCheers Rene, sounds fine then!
Bruce ShenkerJul 22 2008, 12:03pmJust a minor point(don't think it will make much difference) but the handicap is based on percentage in all races run this year, not just the summer league. We have not yet reached the point where we can seperate out the percentage for just the Leinster league. If you need a complete discussion of the advanced mathematics involved look at the description for the 2006 edition of the the race.
Brian SynnottJul 23 2008, 9:25amHi there,

Any chance of some brief directions to the Start/Registration point for tonight's Kippure Run?

I was never great at working out Grid References!!!

Thank you!
Cathal LallyJul 23 2008, 9:26amHi,

Paul MahonJul 23 2008, 11:36amThe Pub for Car Pooling and Prizegiving is the Merry Ploughboy, Rockbrook, Edmonstown Road - pub was formerly known as Docherty's.
Please CAR POOL from here as parking is on road at race start and is disruptive to regular road users!

Full directions to Pub are available at this link http://www.mpbpub.com/location.html

Please park all cars collectively to the rear of the carpark to facilitate the buses that use the section nearer the road.

Directions To Pub:

From the City Centre:
Travel South from O'Connell Street onto D'Olier Street and then turn right onto Dame Street. Turn left into South Great Georges Street. Continue straight through Aungier Street, Wexford Street, Camden Street, Richmond Street, and on to Rathmines Road, and on to Rathgar Road, Terenure Road East, Rathfarnham Road. Turn right into Willbrook Road (at the "Yellow House" Pub and Church). Follow the main road to Ballyboden Road (keep to the right of the "Tuning Fork" pub). Go straight through lights at junction and straight on through roundabout. Continue on for about a mile, the pub will be on your left, the car park on your right.

From the South/Leopardstown (M50):
Take the M50 Motorway North to Firhouse/Ballyboden exit 12. Go around the roundabout and over the bridge over the M50. Go straight through two roundabouts. At 3rd roundabout turn right onto the Old Scholarstown Road towards Edmondstown (signposted). Travel to the end of this road and take a right at the T-Junction. Continue on for almost a mile, the pub will be on your left, the car park on your right.

From the North/Airport (M50):
Take the M50 Motorway South (through tolls) to Exit 12 for Firhouse/Ballyboden. Turn left off of exit ramp. Go straight through first roundabout. At 2nd roundabout turn right onto the Old Scholarstown Road towards Edmondstown (signposted). Travel to the end of this road and take a right at the T-Junction. Continue on for almost a mile, the pub will be on your left, the car park on your right.

Directions to the RACE Start from Pub:
From the pub continue up hill and follow road past turn for Johnny foxes at Pine Forest. After passing Cruagh wood you turn Left at the next junction and then follow that road up ~4 km more to start of race.

Please park on one side only, following parking marshall's directions to allow traffic to pass safely.

From Bray you take road to Enniskerry and continue through the village and up glencree to top of valley (~ 8km)where you turn Right and follow this road for about 2km to start

Jim CorbettJul 24 2008, 7:51amI did the Kippure Handicap Race last night which was very very tough! However, leaving the energy sapping soft bog to one side for a minute, I had forgotten my membership card and number, and when I checked before the race I was given number 143. I now realise that was the wrong number. My number is 274. Sorry about that! Hopefully you can amend the records.
Getting back to the energy sapping soft bog I reckon that was the toughest mountain run I've done so far. The bog ate me up and spat me out!
Paul MahonJul 24 2008, 11:29amMany thanks to the volunteers and cooperative runners that made for a smooth running handicap race last night up and down the soft slopes of Kippure.
In the end last years champion, the course and distance specialist Charlie O Connell, was to find one too strong in the new and improving hill running recruit Paul O Grady who was clearly elated with his first place.
Impressive runs also in third place from the evergreen Ger Power, Pol O'Murchu in 4th and John Fitzgerald who won the sprint for fifth.
A notable in 7th place with a very "Sporting" run was the leniently handicapped Keith Daly and fastest nett time woman and man on the night were Eirn Roberts and Shane O Rourke.
Many thanks also to IMRA's US branch representative Bruce Shenker for his assistance with the handicaps.
The Merry Ploughboy provided a warm welcome for post race refreshments and there we were treated to a guest appearance from the Wicklow Round heroine Moire O sullivan who was looking none the worst for wear after her exploits over the weekend.
Her account of her experience (In the IMRA Reading Room)is an honest and inspiring piece which is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in hillrunning, personal goals and achievment.
Shane O'RourkeJul 24 2008, 4:44pmHey Paul, I'd have been delighted if I was the fastest over the ground last night, but unless I'm doing my sums wrong, I think Bernard Fortune is the man! Thanks for a very well organised race.
Paul MahonJul 24 2008, 5:24pmOhps ............. there goes Bernard ............. Fastest man. apologies all round :-)
Jim CorbettJul 25 2008, 3:22pmRunning up through that bog must have really addled my brain because yesterday morning I put up a post saying I was given the wrong number - 143. I have just seen the photographs today and there I am running up Kippure wearing my proper number - 274. Thats strange and I can only blame the unrelenting and unforgiving bog for making me imagine things.
While I'm here I'll just put up here a litle race report I put up on the Wicklow Triathlon Club Forum. Maybe I can persuade some other members of the club to get invoved in some of the IMRA races, because they are just fantastic fun, tremendously tough and great for developing your grit and determination. Apart from being superb training for making triathlon look easy!

"Brief race report of the IMRA Kippure Handicap Race - a memorable race.
It was the definitely the toughest mountain race I've done so far. It was just under 10k and it was up, up, and up then down, down and down, as they all are, but the thing that made it especially tough was running up through the bog. I reckon at least 2.5k of the run to the summit was on soft peaty bog, which nearly killed me. It wasn't your firm and springy bog, it was soft peat, loose and yielding and uneven. It was like running on dry sand, but unlike sand it didn't have that consistency and every footfall seemed to reveal a different response. Occasionally you could find some grassy tussocks to run on, which were like little islands among the sea of peat. Occasionally you also found some wet bog, which tried to rob you of your trainers. After the turnaround, at the mast, it became a little easier going dowhill. Going downhill is always exciting in the mountain race, because of the danger factor, but here you had no fear of falling and cracking your head open because you would have a lovely soft landing on a bed of soft peat. The problem was the unpredictability of what you would find with each footfall. when running downhill over rocky terrain you are scanning all the time for where to put your feet, but running over this soft and yielding peaty ground meant every step held a surprise! I went over on my right ankle once and my left ankle twice and after that I decided I better take it a bit easy on the downhill. Once out of the bog and back on the track things were a lot easier, but this was where the effort in going up though the bog began to tell. When I crossed the finishing line I was really glad it was over and it felt like I had just down some really long endurance race, which was what it felt like when I did my first olympic distance triathlon. My time for the race was 57.12, but most interesting was my average heart rate which was 170 and maximum 175. Usually my good running race pace average is 164, so it was definitely a tough one!"
