Gerry Brady

Report by Douglas Barry

John Lenihan confirmed his standing as the best mountain runner in Ireland with a win in the World Trophy trial up Galtymore Mountain in Tipperary. However, the Kerry runner had to hold off a surprising challenge from the 44 year old Gerry Brady who belied the fact that he hadn't raced on the mountains for over six years with an emphatic run to beat the 20 year old Mark Doyle into third and give Irish Champion Lenihan a fright to boot.

Mark Doyle was creating his own history making the World's senior team at his first attempt after his world record six consecutive appearances as a junior Irish international. The RDA man went clear of a tremendous battle for fourth as Irish based English runner Simon Fairmainer fended off the close attention of English based Irish runner Jonathan Lamont. Jonathan finished a minute clear of Bob Lawlor who in turn was a minute clear of Noel Marum.

On the medium course which finished on Galtybeg, Peter Dalton built on his recent excellent mountain victories to beat a vastly improved Fergal Fitzmaurice. Fitzmaurice made up for previous disappointments in selection races with a powerful run on the final climb to take Irish Schools Champion Niall Duncan. Martin Bradshaw overcame his ankle injury to take fourth. Eva Mulleady won a poorly supported women's race over the same course to beat Nina Philips by just over a minute.

An intriguing Junior Women's race over the shortest course which finished on the summit of Cush Mountain saw Laura McDonnell lead powerfully up the steep incline. With her excellent performances in the Irish Schools this year, and her great run in the British and Irish Junior International last year, the pundits waited for the expected victory. They waited in vain: the 16 year old blew up on the steep climb. Deirdre Hopkins surged ahead to win 40 seconds ahead of Irish Schools champ Dervla Mulligan with international orienteer Aislinn Austin a close third.
