Mags Greenan (Clonliffe) ran a magnificent race to take victory in the W50 World Masters in Dolni Morava in the Czech Republic. Mags won the European Masters in Lenzerheide in June thus completing a unique double (the only athlete to do so). Greenan started hard from the gun in a race where the men and women in the 50-54 age group started together. Having ensured that no woman had slipped ahead of her at the start she maintained a narrow lead throughout for a tough fought victory. Not far behind her was the 2007 winner. Blanka was a member of the cross-country skiing team that won silver medals in the Winter Olympics in 1980. A proud Greenan sang happily along as they played the national anthem at the prize-giving ceremony. Zoe Melling was 6th in the W35 race and Kathleen Aherne (21st) ran well in the W50 race.

In the M50 race, Martin McDonald ran in a leading group of four runners for 3 km before gradually losing ground to finish a creditable 8th. He was supported by Gerry Brady (11th) and Joe Aherne (68th) who combined for fifth team in the largest race category entry of 125 runners. Sean Foley (12th M45) was the fastest of the Irish runners.

Northern Ireland athletes were prominent in many of the races with Deon McNeilly (6th M45), Tish McCann (10th W45) and Anne Sandford (12th W40) the top placed finishers.

Bernard Fortune ran well the following day in the open 13 km race.
