Inaugural Man vs Bike Race

AuthorDateMessage
Barry MinnockMar 1 2006, 2:38pmMyself & Aaron O?Donoghue plan to organise a race on the 12th April (Wednesday before Killiney Relay) where the mountain runners are pitted against the mountain bikers. We will put significant effort into contriving a route that will see the top biker finish at the same time as the top runner. A staggered start may be necessary in order to handicap one group.

Our selfish purpose to the race will be to raise money in order to enter the CRC Irish Adventure Challenge. Hence we?re planning a 10 euro charge for entry. All money raised will go to charity & we will try to nab companies for some small prizes.

Location for the event is yet to be determined. If we have problems with permits we way have to abandon our plans :-(

Just throwing this out on the forum to determine the potential level of interest & potential level of concern ...
Barry MinnockMar 2 2006, 10:36amTo clarify after some queries yesterday - the plan is that this will be an individual event, where you decide to either run or bike around the course (not both) ...
Martin FlynnMar 2 2006, 4:24pmYou should advertise this on the MTB forum of http://www.mtbireland.com
Paul MahonMar 3 2006, 8:11amGreat idea Barry.
We tried it casually coming off Three Rock a few times but it really depends on the severity of the climbs and the descents.
My money is on the runners if it is steep and technical both going up and down but guess you will try to give a "fair" course for all. Should be some interesting side betting I reckon .......................... for fun of course.
Look forward to seeing what course you lads come up with.
Barry MinnockMar 28 2006, 10:36amI just want to let people know that the Man v Bike event event is still going ahead.

The event will take place on Wednesday 12th April at 7pm. Registration from 6pm, closing at 6:45.

Likely start location is Kilmashogue car-park. Route details to follow shortly.

Disclaimer: This is definitely NOT an IMRA race

Aaron O'DonohueApr 10 2006, 4:44pmRoute details can be seen at http://www.fxref.com/manvbike

We are please to announce that OSi Trail Master has sponsored the top two prizes in this event and the Trail Master product (Wicklow version) is the prize for the first male & female finishers.

The man v bike tshirt (see website) will be awarded to second and third place. The tshirt will also be available for purchase on wednesday evening (all funds raised on wednesday go to C4C for DEBRA Ireland and Fighting Blindness)

Looks like the weather will be good and there has been significant interest in the event... so look forward to seeing you wednesday...
Paul MahonApr 11 2006, 7:43amCourse look good lads - Fairly even between runners and bikers and a decent amount of space for passing out.
Might depend a bit on the weather and the recent activity of the forestry trucks on the main track from the start - This might just swing the advantage to the runners .................. will be interesting to see .....................mmmmmmmmmm!
Barry MApr 11 2006, 4:17pmFor safety reasons we are now likely to set the bikers off 5 or 10 minutes before the runners (i.e. more of a time trial between the bikers & runners).

Please, please carpool from Taylors 3 rock - we won't have enough car parking space up at Kilmashogue (fingers crossed). The prize giving is at Taylors & the finish is close to Taylors, so it makes sense to park there :-)

We will also have a short course for anyone who doesn't feel up to the full 8k - this will turn at the top of boneshaker, avoiding the circuit beyond the mast ...
David GillApr 11 2006, 8:59pmDo you hear that Paul...starting the bikers first... must be expected to be faster. ;)

Will hopefully be there on my bike if I get out of work on time.
Paul MahonApr 12 2006, 7:27amAh Dave ................. they must have heard that you were likely not to last out the full 8 km and decided to give you a head start ................ give you a chance and all that!
Sounds like a side wager will have to be made?????? See you up there and bring some of your biker friends and we will see if it is the bike that maketh the man or otherwise!
Barry MApr 12 2006, 10:30amFrom our testing of the route the MTBers are expected to be faster starting off up the Kilmashogue trail, but by the time everyone gets to the top of boneshaker the runners should have a slight edge.

It should be neck&neck on the second visit to the masts. Our original route was then to go back down the boneshaker, but on mature reflection we now think this is a little too dangerous. We're considering a few alternatives to make it even for runners & bikers from the masts to the race finish ...
Peter O'FarrellApr 12 2006, 1:36pmgo on the gauntlets...
Up the runners! See ye there. The bikers will have no issues coming down the bone shaker, they should be quicker then runners on that section..
Barry MinnockApr 13 2006, 12:20amExcellent turnout for the race last night - 79 in total, raising approx 650euro over insurance costs. All this money will go to charity - Debra Ireland & Fighting Blindness. A big THANK YOU to everyone, especially those who helped (Garrett, Michael, Eoin, Beth, Peter, Orla, Maria, Paul etc etc).

Best wishes to Killian - hope his injury is nothing too serious & that he's feeling better this morning. Apologies to Sean who got lost on our course.

The course favoured the bikers this time around, but at least it was relatively close. We'll endeavor to slow the MTBers down a little for our next race ...

The results will be posted properly later on www.fxref.com/manvbike and www.mtbireland.com, but for those of you who can't wait see provisional results below:

Paul MApr 13 2006, 8:09amJust had a report of Killian's well being - Has a sore head and is taking the day off work but all ok apparently.
Many thanks lads for a great and fun race. Well done to the top bikers ............ maybe next time Garry and James at least can give ye a run for yer money ................?
Barry MinnockApr 13 2006, 8:52amI have to apologise to all those who did the 'short' course last night. Due to some miscommunication with our marshall at the masts he ended up sending the short course folks in the wrong direction - you guys were supposed to turn back at the mast!!! As as result the 'short' course ended up being 8k, only about 300m shorter than the long (altough it had about 80m less climbing). So so sooorrrry

If anyone would like an event t-shirt please let us know (barryminnock at yahoo.com) - only 20euro for a very stylist quality t-shirt, with all profits going to charity (you can decide what colour t-shirt). See www.fxref.com/manvbike to see what they look like ...
James McFaddenApr 13 2006, 9:09amThanks to Barry and Aaron for a thoroughly enjoyable race. The course was great and was perfectly marked. I imagine it?s difficult to strike a balance between runners and bikers and for a first attempt it wasn?t far off. With a bit of tinkering we might take the bikers next time around... Is a year too long to wait?
Aaron O'DonohueApr 13 2006, 1:35pmWhen two tribes go to war...

It was great to bring some of the best mtn bikers and mtn runners in the country to compete together. Thanks to all for turning up and for the positive feedback. Seems like it was an eye-opener for all to compete against another discipline and looks like we have initiated some new rivalries :) Congratulations again to the winners.

We have received a large demand for a repeat event and we had hoped to do something towards the end of the summer but it appears that some of you cannot wait that long so we may look at something over the next month or two... We will of course 'tweak' the route slightly :)
