Lisa LounsburyFeb 2 2009, 12:57amDoes anyone know the percent grade of Croagh Patrick? I'm trying to train here in the US for the hike up and want to train on a grade and distance similiar to Croagh Patrick.

Thanks.
Bruce ShenkerFeb 2 2009, 11:36amCroagh Patrick is very steep, it is hard to put a percent grade on it and there would be many hiking trails in the US that would have a similar grade, the thing that makes Croagh Patrick special (other than the obvious pilmgramage thing, I meant in hiking terms) is that the steepest part for about a mile to the summit is all scree and loose rock which I think would be the most difficult thing to simulate in your training. In any case if you are reasonably fit it should not be a problem, literally thousands of folks do the walk every year
Rene BorgFeb 2 2009, 12:02pmI thought no one would ever ask!

The average grade is 22.1% on Croagh Patrick as measured last year by my Garmin. The maximum gradient found is 41.5%!
Turlough ConwayFeb 2 2009, 5:51pmJust to add there are three parts to the uphill: Steep, steeper and steepest.
The last steepest part is a scree covered cone. It is quite rocky and the descent is challenging where time can be gained or lost..

We have the second race of the Connaught Championship the following day on Ben Gorm nearby and we should have some deals available in the Delphi adventure Centre should you require it.
bob fisherFeb 2 2009, 8:52pmhow old do you have to be to run this race?
Turlough ConwayFeb 5 2009, 12:33pmHi Bob, turning juniors born in 1990-1991 back early (not going up screed Cone). Probably not allowing runners born in 1992 or later run unless accompanied by an adult who must stay with them.
