trail shoes

Padraig ReillyJan 18 2010, 1:21pmJust wondering what your opinions are on the Brooks Cascadia trail shoe .Are they suitable for the Irish trails ,especially all the muck that we have at the moment .I know that they aren't water proof but that doesn't worry me .

Thanks Padraig
Jason KehoeJan 18 2010, 7:16pmHi Padraig,

I dont have a pair but I have heard very good reports about them. They would be very suitable for the Leinster league races which have a lot of trail and a bit of the rough stuff here and there. Don't worry about your shoes being waterproof, I dont think any 'waterproof' shoe will protect you when you find yourself knee deep in a peat bog anyway!

Grip wise, as long as it wasn't very very wet, they would also do well for the championship races which are mostly on open mountain.

Go for it!

Jason.

Daniel CroninMar 16 2010, 12:53pmHi

I'm looking to try out mountain running and am completely baffled as to what or where one can get decent running shoes. I run on with asics kayanos and find them great, would anyone be able to give me any advice please?

Thanks
Danny
Paul O'GradyMar 16 2010, 1:15pmNiall,

I fell into that trap - I read a trail shoes review in Mens Fitness and they rated the Timberlands as the best by a mile - so I bought them when I saw them in Dundrum.

The soles are exceptionally thin and hard - and I only found this out about half way through the powerscourt ridge race - i had all sorts of problems with my knees and ankles after the race and was laid up for at least 6 weeks.

If you like a thin hard shoe then go for them - but if you need a bit of cushioning and flexability the avoid them like the plague! Obviously recycled car tyres dont make good soles for running shoes!!!

I bought a pair of Nike ACG's (all condition gear) in America as a replacement and find them excellent - but when you think about it once you get the weight of someone like Nike behind a project you would expect a good outcome!!

Best of luck in finding a pair that suits you.

Mick HanneyMar 16 2010, 1:33pmSome trail shoe suggestions:-

Inov-8s are quite popular. Amphibian King in Bray stock them and you could do the gait analysis there.. try them on and run a bit in them.. to see if they are suitable. You'll get 10% off with your imra card.

The orange Inov-8s (roclites) seem to be quite popular. I've a pair that has stood the test of time in hill races. I was an asics kayano wearer too before I hit the hills.

I have recently used a pair of Inov-8 x-talon 212s (got them online) and they are the business.

Furthermore, salomon speed-cross 2s are pretty good too. Snow and Rock in Dundrum stock them.

If your looking at the off road (off trail) shoes I highly recommend Inov8's 330s. Savage grip for descending through mud and other slop.

Alot of the trail races I've run you can get away with normal runners - it just depends on the conditions.

Eamonn HodgeMar 21 2010, 6:44pmI'd echo Mick's recommendation on the Salomon Speed Cross 2s. They're the business. Very light and great cushioning. I've used them for IMRA mountain runs and Gaelforce and Achill Roar. They're very comfortable on hard trail as well as having great grip on the mucky stuff. Some trail shoes/mountain runners don't have a lot of cushioning if you have to go on-road.

Jenny Kilbride in Outdoor Evolution in Blessington is having a 20% off sale at the moment meaning you can pick up a pair of Speed Cross 2s for 92 euro instead of 115. My pair are grand at the moment but I'm going to pick up a spare for when the tread wears out.
