FRA Safety Rules

Pat BarryJan 6 2014, 9:14amThis may be important for IMRA officials. In April last year a runner died during a Lake District race. That was bad enough but an additional tragedy was that the race organisers got the count wrong and did not know that a runner had not finished until his wife reported him missing, later that evening, when he did not return to the hotel.

As a consequence of this the FRA committee have had a rewrite of safety rules and this has caused a real implosion within the Fell Running community. There are some serious arguments happening on the FRA Forums and the Fell Runners Association Facebook page. I have got tired of reading the arguments but the crux seems to be that some race organisers feel it is not possible to be fully compliant with the new safety rules, thereby making their FRA insurance invalid. They could then be personally liable in a claim following an incident. There have been particular attacks on the organiser of two of Lake Districts classic races (Teenager with Altitude and Anniversary Waltz) resulting in these races leaving the umbrella of the FRA to be run as totally independent races.
