David NooneMay 2 2014, 5:05pmHello IMRA folks!

We managed to successfully complete the entire length of the Western Way trail non-stop. It took us 31 hours 42 minutes.

As well as undertaking the challenge of such a distance, we want to promote the Western Way and raise awareness of the fantastic trails that are out there to be explored in the West. The Western Way is a long-distance trail approximately 184 kilometres long from Oughterard, County Galway to Ballycastle, County Mayo passing through Leenane, Westport and Newport on the way. The scenery is spectacular along the whole route.

The five runners who undertook the challenge were David Noone (Loughrea), Pat Staunton (Westport), Caroline McLoughlin (Achill), Paul Higgins & Damien McSharry (Sligo). We started in Oughterard at 9:02am on Friday 25th April and finished in Ballycastle at 4:44pm on Saturday 26th April.

A team of 30 people were involved between crew and support runners. We received wonderful support from the crew, could not have done it without them, and we want to express our gratitude to them. This started off as a physical challenge but at the end of the day ended up being simply about people and teamwork.

The Western Way is a wonderful facility that we have in the West. We’d love some of you IMRA people to come down and see what the West has got to offer!
