Head torches

Ken Murray | Sep 14 2014, 9:38pm | Hi There was a really good thread on here a year or two back discussing head torches. The links to any recommendations have lapsed over the years though so can anyone point me towards a head torch for some upcoming night running (such as the Wicklow Mtn Rescue Moonlight Challenge in Nov) ? There are a few on www.dealextreme.com but I'm not sure which to go for. Any advice folks ? Ken |
John J Barry | Sep 14 2014, 9:52pm | Back then the Fenix 10/11 got good praise. Super bright. Faultless from that aspect. But quality is so poor. Bro send back at least two. The rachet on mine also broke. Elastic band holding light in right angle now. |
Tim Chapman | Sep 14 2014, 10:00pm | The led lenser I think the h7 got great review. I asked the original question and ended up going for the petzel myo xp. Used a good few times well pleased with it. |
Kieran Lynch73 | Sep 14 2014, 10:45pm | Petzl myo xp gets my vote, it has served me well for the last couple of years. |
Diarmuid O'Colmain | Sep 15 2014, 3:26pm | I think the Led Lenser 7R has got to be the best head torch in the entire world! It is light, has a rechargeable battery but accommodates 3 X AAA batteries as an alternative, and is like a private sun! Well ok I'm getting a bit carried away now but it is very good for a light weight torch all in one piece - no separate extra battery pack. (It's not the cheapest) And No! I have no vested interest. |
Ken Murray | Sep 15 2014, 10:46pm | Great advice thanks gents....I've also been recommended the Black Diamond Spot (link below) but reckon I might go for the Led Lenser SEO 5. While it isn't rechargeable like the 7R its only marginally heavier @ 105 grs and is 30 quid cheaper !. The Petzl myo xp is also a bit over my price range and seems to be quite a bit heaver @ 175grms www.greatoutdoors.ie/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=126&products_id=238006 |
Paul Morrissey | Sep 16 2014, 3:27pm | Hi, I can strongly recommend the Black diamond spot you mention, plenty bright, loads of features, robust and far cheaper than the equivalent petzl. But if its raw lumens that you are after there are some remarkably powerful lights available for next to nothing. http://www.amazon.co.uk/KK-LIGHT-KKgud-Rechargeable-Battery-Charger/dp/B00JYB48JA/ref=sr_1_20?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1410875792&sr=1-20&keywords=cree+bike+lights The drawback with these lights is that they have external batteries and are bulky, however they are surprisingly confortable to wear and can also go on your bike. The most important thing is their ability to turn night into day and for that they cannot be beaten for the price. |
Ken Murray | Sep 16 2014, 6:54pm | I have a pretty good cable light for my MTB from dealextreme so was looking for something with self contained power for running... both the Black Diamond and Led Lensers are stocked in town so I reckon I'll check both out in the flesh and then decide...thx lads |
John Langenbach | Sep 17 2014, 11:48am | I have the Black Diamond Spot too (~2 years). Very happy with it. Light, bright, comfortable and easy on batteries. No "I should have bought that other one" thoughts. I've never had reason to use the dim red light or flashing features but the various options for the white beam are useful. |

Harry aaa | Oct 14 2014, 3:07pm | I have bought the Silva Trail Runner Plus via Amazon. The Plus version has a battery pack (4xAA) on a belt. The light itself is very bright and because of the 4xAA batteries it lasts forever. 6 hrs on full strength (100 lumens). It has 1 bright LED and then 2 dimmer ones that shine to the right and left so you have some peripheral vision. Have done a lot of running and hiking with it and it's very comfy and bright. http://silva.se/products/sport/trail-runner-plus |
Dylan Waldron | Nov 6 2014, 1:49pm | Got the LED Lenser 7R and ran with it this week - great headtorch, very comfy to run with on the head, even on fast dowhnhill it doesn't move, and more than enough light/lighting options on tap. I've always used Petzyl's in the past but this blows them out of the water. |
Stephen Bailie | Nov 6 2014, 5:10pm | You just cant beat any of the LED LENSER series of head torches. I use one in the night nav events. No complaints and good value under €50 |
Jason Dowling | Nov 17 2014, 9:08pm | Recently picked up the SEO7R. Have done a couple of night runs with it and am very happy with it. It's very bright (200 lumens) and also very comfortable. I had a Petzl XP before it and beats it hands down. The light on the 7R stays fixed when going downhill (unlike the Perzel where the light kept bouncing forward in its holder so you ended up only able to see a couple of feet in front of you at most which was very annoying). Paid €80 for it, but it was definitely worth the price. |

Ray Lonergan | Jun 26 2017, 11:32am | I know this is an old discussion brought back to life by spam, but I noticed some respondents enthused over Led Lenser head torches. My experience is different. Although the previous H7 that I owned was excellent the more recent version that they brought out, the H7.2, is a waste of money. The battery life in normal use is just 5 hours. There is a lot of cheap plastic, the battery compartment is flimsy (mine broke the second time that I used it). With the batteries loaded it is heavy and it slips a lot when running. It is bright but just not good for trail running for the reasons above. It seem to me that the accounts dept in Led Lenser designed it with cost cutting in mind. If you are considering buying one please read the negative reviews online - they are in my experience the accurate ones for this lamp. Sorry for the long review but the led lenser h7.2 was probably one of the worst product that I ever bought. |
John Condon | Jun 26 2017, 11:49am | Couldn't agree more Ray. I had the same issues with mine. Battery life is absolutely terrible. Compartment broke 3 weeks after purchase. |
Gordon Place | Jun 26 2017, 12:17pm | Silva Explore had great wide light but battery cap was crap too. Lugs broke off easily. Wouldn't be that bad if you could get replacement caps but you can't. A cable tie works but not the best. Their Trail Runner 2 usb rechargeable one is okay. I got it as it has bike attachments as well for the light, but turns out has none for the battery pack so not much use. Bright as a car headlight on full but settings tend to be either too bright/single beam or borderline not bright/wide enough for mountain running. |
