Keith DalyAug 25 2006, 2:02pmHello,
Just a quick query. Has anyone done this mountain race before? It seems to be a good challenge... it is 8.4km long with 1190 metre climb. Finish is at 1800metres above sea level! Wonderful part of Germany that is not to difficult to get to.
Not much info on the website(http://www.skberchtesgaden.de/kalender.php) so any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith
Douglas BarryAug 25 2006, 8:09pmYes Keith, it is an interesting part of Germany.

The course is a shortened version of the one used for the Worlds in 1994. Although it is 12 years since the race there is a strong link with the Worlds in '06 - Robin Bryson who finished 9th on what can be candidly called a savage course is back on the Irish team for Turkey in September. The current course should be even more savage as over 4k has been taken from the World's course and yet the height difference remains the same. You'll need new legs after it. There is of course NO descent as the Germans are not keen on that aspect of the sport.

The mountain has been used for the Olympic downhill skiing and is very close to Hitler's Eagles Nest. That man liked a view, and having been up there, you'd have to admire his taste in mountain lairs, even though his taste in politics was appalling.

Berchtesgaden is easily accessible by train from Munich or Salzberg and there's enough to see around there to ensure that a car is not really needed. We stayed in the Sporthotel Seimler which had 3 stars at the time and was pretty good.

All in all an interesting place, though at the time Adolph Hitler and his relationship with that part of Germany was very much the elephant in the room.
Keith DalyAug 28 2006, 1:17pmThanks for your reply Douglas- very much appreciated. That does sound tough... but definitely a challenge. I imagine both legs and lungs will have to be replaced after the race! Two of us have booked tickets Dublin to Munich with Aer Lingus. Any other takers?

For anyone who may be interested here is a good link with details of races in Germany and I think Austria as well->
