Peter O'Farrell | Jul 31 2017, 10:16am | There is a possibility of two runners on 4 points, each with 2 wins and 1 second place. The scenario is Brian furey winning Galtymore with Jason Kehoe coming second. Obviously it is only a possibility but is the rule written down somewhere for who gets to wear the garlands? Both runners will have competed at different amounts of events with Brian missing Carantoohill and Jason winning there and both finished Slieve Donard off the podium- Jason in 8th and Brian in 10th. In the ladies race a draw seems less likely to happen with Cathy Wyse sitting in the hot seat and Ciara Largey likely to usurp Cathy if she wins Galtymore. Ciara was 5th and Cathy 14th on Slieve Donard. |
Rene Borg | Jul 31 2017, 10:32am | Seems the following scenarios are open: Jason has 2 x 1 point, 8 points and 3 points, so his current score is 5 points. Brian has 10, 2 and 1, so currently 13 but can end up on 4 by winning Galtymore. If Jason wins he ends up on 4 and Brian on 5 or more. Should Jason be 2nd and Brian 3rd (or viceversa) Jason would stay on 5 and Brian would have 6. So seems: - Brian has to win the race to win the championship OR finish 2nd while Jason finishes 3rd or lower (this would lead to the 5 v 5 tie) - Jason has to win the race OR finish ahead of Brian (if not winning it) to win the championship From memory I believe previous ties were settled on head to head record, victory at CArrauntoohil or number of wins. This is how it would work out if Brian finishes 2nd to create the 5 v 5 tie: - Wins: Brian (1) vs Jason (2) - Jason wins - Carrauntoohil victory: Jason (Jason wins) - Head to head (assuming both race Galtymore): 2 - 2 (no decision) The final option would be a joint champion but that's probably the least satisfying for everyone so let's hope either Jason or Brian win so we can have a 'clean' decision and unambiguous Irish Champion. |
Pól Ó Murchú | Jul 31 2017, 11:00am | Hi Peter, yes there are clear rules on this. They can be found in the competition document as far as I know. In summary most wins followed by head to head races would decide. |
Laura Flynn | Jul 31 2017, 11:20am | Good question Peter. Pól is correct and you'll find the full answer in rule 6 of the Competition Rules within the Constitution link at the bottom of the home page. |
Peter O'Farrell | Jul 31 2017, 11:30am | @Rene - Jason is currenting winning. The only way he loses is Brian winning and Jason not coming second. @Pól. Found it there under the constitution link. Basically Brian has to win (no pressure Brian). Anything less less than first for Brian leads to Jason winning. If Brian wins Jason has to come second to secure the championship on countback. In that case both runners will have two wins and a second place. Jason wins on countback due to beating Brian on Slieve Donard. (Brian wasn't on Carantoohill so it doesn't count for countback? a slight weakness in the system?? ) If Ciara comes first or second she cannot be beaten by any result of Cathys. The rules are copied below: The winner of a championship or league event is awarded one point. The person finishing second is awarded two points and so on. In the event of a tie on points, the runner with the most wins will be given the higher placing. If the tie is still not resolved then the runner with the best head-to-head result will be given a higher placing (e.g. if two runners are tied on points then if Person A beat Person B more times than Person B beat Person A then person A gets the higher placing). If the tie is still not resolved then the best non-counting race will be used. |
