Double Wicklow Round Attempt

AuthorDateMessage
John MurrayMay 27 2019, 9:29amHi All,

I'm making my formal announcement for my attempt of the Wicklow Round this bank holiday weekend and as much as I hate doing loops this will be a DOUBLE Round attempt.

I have my retro Casio watch ready to go and I will be setting off at 2am Sunday 2nd June. The logistics of doing a Double Round means there is no real scope to slide the start time, so come hail rain or shine I will be setting off at that time. :)

I'll post the tracker link later in the week once it's set up.

I've done plenty of recce's over the past 10 months and have numerous route choices on many sections depending on how I'm feeling, weather and time of day etc. This is certainly a challenge that will bend my limits beyond anything I've ever done before but with a bit of luck hopefully it doesn't break them!

I have a super Crew(s) with Ivana, Frank, Tom, Conor & Suzanne behind me who will be tag teaming over the 2 days to help wipe the tears, keep me focused and moving forward.

Hopefully see a few of you out there on the hills too as from talking to others who have done the Round before it can be a great brief distraction from the pain! lol

John

Ps: getting this announcement out of the way early so I can try get my nerves under control!!! :)

The very best of luck with it.

PS: Dont run the batteries out on the tracker :)
Lillian DeeganMay 31 2019, 6:58pmEnjoy the horizontal time tonight John, me thinks you may find it hard seeking shut eye though. Seeing Rob's msg there has me smiling for you - be sure to pack the power bank. Hope to see you above somewhere after gun time.

Rob,
Double jobbing here :) Will you throw them few RD kit bits in when heading up to them there hills. Pass them on to John's crew me to collect. Ta ;)
Jason DowlingJun 1 2019, 7:09amWishing you the very best on your big adventure over the week-end. Hope the elements are in your favour for the majority of your run ('cause they certainly aren't going to be in your favour for all of it!!). Bring a light for waist height in case of rain/fog at night. Have a great week-end :)
Shane LynchJun 3 2019, 11:46amWell done John on completing the Wicklow round. Sure it wasn’t a double, but you did mighty well to complete the round with the thick foggy conditions you started in and to be able to relocate and get back on track in those conditions and to go on to complete a round is impressive. Well done!
Brian KitsonJun 3 2019, 12:49pmThat attempt was a seriously impressive endeavour, John and congratulations for bagging the Wicklow Round.

Welcome to the club!
Mike JordanJun 14 2019, 7:57amHi John. What was your time and splits for your successful round? I know you like transparency :D ;)
John MurrayJun 14 2019, 9:58amHere you go Mike :D....and thanks lads for the nice comments.

The weather definitely didn't help me with the Double Attempt but I had no option but to go at the time set. With a couple of schoolboy nav errors early on during the night which lost me a lot of time (+2hrs) I stuck to the plan and ran conservatively for the rest of the day and finished the first Round in 22hrs 05mins 23secs.

Conor O'FarrellJun 15 2019, 5:12pmWell done John. Double or not, that is still an amazing achievement.

Hopefully your double-post will go some way towards making up for missing out on your goal this time. ;-)
