The 24 hour event, for teams of 2-5 competitors, starts at 2pm on Saturday 14th June. The 6 hour event, which can be for individuals or for teams of 2-5, commences at 8am on Sunday 15th June.

The base will be about 2km up a forest road just north of Laragh village. Both events are using pre-marked laminated maps. These will be issued at the start of each event. No other map is necessary.

Elaine CaseyJun 2 2025, 7:10pmThis looks like fun, I've never heard of it before, where can I get more info on how it works? Thanks
Pól Ó MurchúJun 2 2025, 7:56pmIt’s basically like a big treasure hunt where you need to navigate around the mountains using map and compass to find as many controls (the treasure) as you can in either 6 or 24 hours. Each control usually has a number of points attached to it so maybe the near ones might have 100 points and those further away (or harder to find) might have anything from 200 -4/500. Depending on the course and any given year. The winning team or individual in the case of the 6 hour is the one who bags the most points in the designated time. Large penalties apply to teams coming back late (maybe 100 points a minute) and some years have seen teams lose all their points for arriving back late. Fantastic event and would highly recommend regardless of your level certainly the 6 hour is achievable for anyone with a bit of nav experience. If lacking the nav element you can always grab a partner who can read a map and use a compass and follow them around for the 6 (or 24 hours.) but more info on how the event works here: https://setantaorienteers.org/rogaine/ and there’s also a link to the rules there which gives a good insight to the event. Oh and almost forgot to mention the post event BBQ! The BBQ is worth the entry fee alone! Savage spread and a chance to catch up with other competitors and exchange war stories of where you got lost or spent hours looking for a control in the wrong places and maybe pick up a few tips for next year.
Stuart ScottJun 4 2025, 11:35amElaine, it's like an extra long parkrun. You'll be grand!

Not much to add to Pol's description, but as Pol says, you'll need some basic nav ability but other than that, it's always a great day out and how far you go is completely up to you. I'm sure if you post here you might get some company too.
Brian HouriganJun 4 2025, 6:21pm@Elaine, yes it's great craic. Very like the IMRA Nav Challenges but longer. Just don't do what our team did last year and risk going for one last checkpoint that was 'not too far away from where we are' for the extra points only to end up back at base around 40 minutes late and a whopping -4000 penalty points for the score board :) ....... and yes this was my idea!
