The Irish women had a tougher time of it only managing to finish 17th of 19 teams. Italy won the team title and the individual gold medal. Rosita Rota Gelpi added yet another world title to her collection, but only by edging out Anna Pichrtova of the Czech Republic by a scant 10 seconds. Pichtova had the run of the day considering that less than two weeks earlier she had finished 28th in the Olympic marathon in Athens. Some recovery considering what that course did to Paula Ratcliffe! 38 year old Trish Sloan was best of the Emerald Islanders in 48th, and Beth McCluskey in 56th led in the Ireland team.

1. Rosita Rota Gelpi 50-27
56. Beth McCluskey 63-31
67. Orla Tuohy 66-17
69. Alwynn Shannon 66-24
71. Maureen Foley 67-30
