| Paul Nolan | Apr 1 2010, 8:47am | The route is very straightforward. Starting at Wicklow Gap it's straight up to the top of Tonelagee, from there it's an anticlockwise lap of Lough Iolar returning to the top and straight back down to Wicklow Gap. Regards, Paul (course designer) |

Well done Paul, fast and furious in the muck, slop and wind, just as I like it! I'd be interested to see the optimal race route from an experienced guy like yourself (probably involves absailing maybe?). Oh, friendly piece of advice for others, if you didnt notice the contour lines on the map, mind the cliff edge! ;) |
| Ronan Hickey | Apr 9 2010, 10:48am | Hi Niamh, I've signed up as a volunteer. If I can I'd like to run the race as I swore that I would do at least one Leinster Championship race this year but if you're stuck then I can switch to being a non-runner. |
| Paul Nolan | Apr 12 2010, 2:14pm | Jason If I was running the race I'd make sure to use the tiny path up from Wicklow Gap. From the car park scan the slopes of Tonelagee, about 150/200 metres from the road there is a single wooden post. It makes a good point to use to pick up that path. On the first descent I'd follow the walkers path down beside the cliffs until the flat stoney piece of ground. From there contour around the left of the little climb for a bit (there are sheep tracks) before turning straight down to the lake. This keeps the deep heather time to a minimum and gets you beyond the rocks. Running along the lake shore isn't too bad. Hopefully the weather will be fine on the day, as the view up the second climb is a stunning one. |

I have a spare whistle and compass if you want which I can bring along for you on the day. I'm a running volunteer so I'll be there fairly early. Ronan P.S. And I promise I won't pull the old "Give him the remagnetised compass schtick". Although maybe I'll check your usual placings... :-) |

I also hear there is another longer but maybe more run friendly route slightly further to the right of the lake. And after all the hype I dont think I'll be able to run it after all. Serving on the frontlines of WAR took it out of me. Will have to make a call on the morning. :( @Ronan Hickey in the carpool list - Just noticed your route is via Roundwood. This is the long way round from Glasnevin unless you have a reason to go to Roundwood. Best bet is getting off at the Tallaght or Firhouse exit. Put it into Google maps. Glasnevin -> Wicklow Gap. |

| Jason Kehoe | Apr 21 2010, 6:08pm | OK Kevin you found me out! I was going to try for a seat with Ronan if I was running and I live in Tallaght! But the important factor is that it's shorter! :) BTW there have been plans in the pipeline for quite a while to upgrade the N81 to some form of motorway from Tallaght to Hollywood and it will also bypass Blessington. Not sure of construction dates as yet though but they were sending proposed bypass routes of Blessington to homeowners a few weeks ago. It's currently a death trap especially for cyclists and on winter nights. |

You can do the navigating from there through to the race and I'll get to see this shorter route of yours! Throw me an email (my email address is on my profile) and we can sort out where and when to pick you up. I'll change my carpool to indicate we're hitting Tallaght. Any other D24 heads out there need a lift? @John, I'll bring them along anyway just in case. This is going to be my first unmarked race myself so I hear ya on the pushing the boat out! |
| Niamh O'Ceallaigh | Apr 23 2010, 8:50am | The forecast looks good for the race tomorrow at Tonelegee and the Lake. Please remember the mandatory kit of route map, compass, whistle and raincoat. These will need to be carried regardless of the weather. IMRA will be providing sandwiches after the race at the Glendalough Hotel. Due to the dry forecast, it will be nice for people to hang around the finish, watching the other finishers hurtling down the side of Tonelegee to the finish line. This will also be handier for people coming from West Wicklow side. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided by IMRA, but I suggest you bring plenty of warm clothes and perhaps something to sit on. Well done to Brian on his second Leinster Championship race win on the trot - he should be hot favourite to win the Leinster crown this year. Only downside was the lack of female runners - come on ladies, ye missed a good one today! |

If its any consolation Dermot, I would have been there yesterday to boost the ladies' numbers - sounded like a great race and perfect route. Had to content myself with a run in the Kathmandu Valley instead :) Hope you're all keeping well. |
