2001 Leinster League
Brockagh - Preliminary Report by Douglas Barry
Simon Fairmaner turned the tables on his Scalp conqueror Hugh McLindon with a measured effort in the Brockagh race a week later. McLindon who prefers steeper climbs and descents to those of this 5 mile route in the heart of Wicklow was outpaced on the ascent by the improving English runner.
Try as he might, McLindon, who through his job as a National Park ranger actually looks after the mountains in the area, could not catch the fleet footed Fairmaner and take a local victory. He closed him down, but the cool Englishman didn't let the gap diminish enough on the sweeping descent. Portmarnock winner Aonghus O'Cleirigh took great third place and the M40 laurels.
Beth McCluskey showed again the marvellous form she has constantly shown throughout 2001 and came home an easy winner of the women's race only 4 and a half minutes behind Simon Fairmaner. Beth finished ahead of Laura McGinley who is working herself back to the form she showed as an international runner. Another international Joan Flanagan took third and the W40 honours.
