2001 Leinster League
Sorrel Hill - Preliminary report by Douglas Barry
Newcastle's Deon McNeilly made one of his lightning raids down to southern parts of this island, and a profitable one it was too. The former British cross country champion fended off 2001 Leinster League champion elect Simon Fairmaner to win the 10 kilometre Sorrel Hill race in a fine time of 38 minutes 38 seconds despite slightly difficult conditions due to wind on the return from the summit. Simon's second place together with Deon's win ensures that Simon takes, at a minimum, a share of the championship if his main rival Hugh McLindon wins the last two races.
Aonghus O'Cleirigh got up to pass Brendan O'Brien taking third place overall and the first veteran's prize. He also set a veteran's record of 42 minutes dead. This probably will be as hard to beat as John Lenihan's outright course record of 36 minutes dead. Women's record holder Laura McGinley won the women's race and proved that she nearing her best form as her time was only 12 seconds outside her 1999 record. First vet Joan Flanagan took second place ahead of former course record holder Una May. Joan's time was also a vet record.
