Trail World Championship 2017

10th June 2017 - Trail Sacred Forests - Badia Pratlagia, Tuscany, Italy.

The 2017 IAU Trail World Championships were held on Saturday 10th June 2017 at the Trail Sacred Forests in Badia Pratlagia.

This year the event consisted of a 50km Trail race incorporating approximately 3,000 metres of elevation gain.
The course was run on a mixture of forested trail terrain with some very steep ascents and descents.
39 nations attended the event which started in the centre of Badia Pratlagia at 8am local time.
Spain’s Luis Alberto Hernando won the championship outright for the second year in a row in a time of 4:23.
France's Adeline Roche won the women’s title in a time of 5:00:44, just 3 seconds ahead of team mate Amandine Ferrato with a time of 5:00:47.

The Irish team consisted of 4 males and 3 female members, with a good mix of well accomplished International experience along with a couple of new, up and coming kids on the block of Trail Running.
Many of the countries represented at the event failed to get all their athletes to complete the course, so it was a huge achievement and a credit to all the Irish athletes to have completed the course and post a finishing time, with each team, Male and Female recorded in the final results sheet.
The male team performed well beyond our most recent previous performances with huge improvements relative to closing the gap on the leading International runners.
The female team were the first of their kind for Ireland in this event, and performed exceptionally well in what was a very tough and testing course that saw many a well experienced International Team buckle at the knees due to the intense competition, heat and humidity, on the challenging course.
The performance of both the male and female teams gives Ireland a good platform from which to build upon while heading into the future with the IAAF recognised sport of Trail Running.
