Mick Kellett lost on Church mountain with 2 ladies

The first of this years 50K races was run in very good conditions. Visibility was great, if anything the sun was beginning to become too strong towards the end.

23 runners took part. At the start most went right but a few went left and these reached the summit of Church first. From the top of Church most runners went through the young trees but it was a little slow. Gerry Brady found a small track on the left and achieved a good lead wit this. Some runners turned right and took a long route around the trees.

The run up Corriebracks was not too wet. From the top there were three routes. The one taking the track on the right seems to have been the best but only one runner saw that. Most runners went back down the track they had come up on the left. Some went straight down over the peat cuttings. It didn?t seem to make any differences as the track meandered quite a bit.

At the standing stones the field was quite strung out. All went on through Toor and back over the shoulder of Church. Some did not go down to the road but turned left back through the trees which was a little longer.

Meanwhile Mick with Geraldine and Colleen eventually made it to Corriebracks and then came back down the track on the left to the bottom of Church. However they did not veer off to the right and instead went straight on onto a new track cut into the trees. Mick claimed he didn?t have his GPS on.

Back at the finish people drove around to various points to find the missing Mick and co. There was some consideration of calling mountain rescue but how could we tell them that Mick was missing. Eventually, they relocated at the bottom of Church and the ladies decided to return they way they had gone out. Mick was determined to finish and went the correct way towards the standing stones.

Geraldine and Colleen duly arrived back just in time to claim ice creams from Gerry. Mick came in a little later.
