ARUP Mountain Running Championships On Slieve Bearnagh.

Turner Gives Lenihan A Big Scare while Mc Intyre and Blackburn Make The Cut For Alaska!

Clareman, James Mc Intyre of Shannon made a little bit of history yesterday on Slieve Bearnagh near Killaloe, when he qualified for the World Championships in Achorage,Alaska on his very first outing as a mountain runner.
The Tulla AC Clubman, whose feats on road and in cross country competitions are well documented, showed how competent an all-rounder he is and what is more, he enjoyed every minute of it.
James has opted to travel to Alaska which is a big boost for the sport of mountain running in Munster.
He finished 5th over-all on a time of 48.47 which was an amazing performance for the genial Clareman.
Tom Blackburn of Bilboa AC also made the cut and will be joining John Lenihan and James on the trip.
To get three Munster men on the team is a major achievement and we are all so proud of them.

The race was led out by the Dooneen AC Junior International Colm Turner with Peter Dalton of DSD in close contact. The chasing bunch included the former World Champion John Lenihan of Riocht AC,
McIntyre,George Lonergan of Raheny Shamrocks and Paul Nolan of DSD. Dalton led Turner on the way
out to Moylussa with Lonergan, Nolan and Mc Intyre following in sequence. Lenihan made big head-way on the climb and was 2nd to Turner on the summit with Lonergan 3rd. Turner built up a lead of some 20M
on Lenihan on the descent and on his way to the foot of Feenlea Mountain. Lenihan took advantage of a
course deviation by the young Dooneen clubman at this point and it was all over. Lenihan won the race on 46.47 from Turner who finished 2nd on 47.21.
Breda Barrett of Gneeveguilla AC was the first lady home in the Munster Championship when she finished on 45.13 ahead of Loretto Duggan of St Mary’s AC who finished 2nd on 47.02.Trish Blackburn of Bilboa AC was the first F/35 Lady when she finished on 51.11.
The race attracted an entry of 74 which was the largest entry of any Munster Championship Mountain Race to date.
