A tough race day all around both for the volunteers and for the athletes. The rain settled in during the night and never really let up just like the pace of the runners at the front who also were not prepared to let up until they had assured themselves of international and club honours.

First off were the women and junior men. Streaking through the end of the first lap was Eoin Rowan from North Sligo. Eoin won the World Trophy trial last year in similar style and he is making a habit of running well in these races. Behind him came Conor Moore (Omagh), Kian Jennings (DSD) and Jason Wilson (Pegasus). The four stayed in that order to the finish with Eoin winning by 31 seconds.

While the junior men were on their second lap, Michelle Finn (Duhallow) came through for a very convincing victory ahead of DSD runners Carol Huet and Aisling Walsh.

First year senior, Angela Speight (Omagh) caused quite an upset when she led all the way to win the women?s race from Fiona Maxwell (Mourne runners). Following not too far behind were the ever improving Aisling Coppinger (Clonliffe), and debutantes Donna Mahon (Rathfarnham) and Mags Greenan (Clonliffe). These three had switched positions during the race before the mountain racing experience of Aisling paid off when she pushed for home after the big climb on the last lap. When Karen Duggan finished in 11th it looked as though the title of national club champions had gone to Clonliffe. However, in from the rain in the Powerscourt Arms, the laptop told us that Omagh and Clonliffe had finished on equal points but that Omagh had shaded it by virtue of Kelly-Ann Speight finishing one place ahead of Karen Duggan. Rathfarnham were third ahead of Crusaders.

The senior men had started ten minutes after the women and they had three laps ahead of them. Stephen Duncan (Omagh) had a 50 metres lead on Barry Minnock (Rathfarnham) at the end of the first lap and he held it all the way to the finish to win by over a minute. Ronan Guirey (Rathfarnham), Des Woods (Mourne), Tom Hogan (Slaneyside) and John Brooks (Rathfarnham) were in third to sixth at the end of the first and second laps and it stayed like that with Des Woods edging out Tom Hogan for the vital fourth spot. With three in the top six and Peter O?Farrell in seventh, Rathfarnham were convincing winners of the team title ahead of Mourne Runners, North Laois and Crusaders.

A wet day and a great team of volunteers ensured that everything went well in very trying conditions.
