This is an extension of the old course, and was used for the first time in the 2010 race. There are two variations from the old route (both out and back). The route no longer takes the off-Wicklow Way shortcut between Curtlestown and Crone woods, but instead remains on the Wicklow way (i.e. it takes the same route as the WW relay). Please also note that you must stick to the Wicklow Way when you are on it - no shortcuts are allowed. The turnaround point has been moved down to the lower Ballinastoe woods car park. These changes result in an increase in the length of the route to a little over 50km, and approximatly 200 metres of additional climb.

Please note for 2019 - start will be on the road outside Johnny Foxes - Finish should be at the GAA

A Google Earth KML file of the route is available here. If you have Google Earth installed on your computer you can download this file and use it to explore the route.

The Maurice Mullen Ultra is the official trial race for the ITRA World Trail championships in Mirandha do Corvo Portugal on 8th June 2019. Guideline times for qualification are men 4hrs 15mins and women 5hrs 15mins.

First two qualifying athletes in the trial race in both categories, provided that the guideline selection times are achieved. Other positions for selection will also be considered based on the trial race and on individual ranking as per recent performances at other National and International running events completed within the 6 months preceding the trial race (preference is given to performances in the mountains). This means that full teams may not be selected to travel to the Championship event. All queries regarding selection should be directed to selection@imra.ie as soon as possible. Further details can be found in the IMRA Competition Rules and IMRA High Performance Strategy. https://www.imra.ie/constitution/ https://www.imra.ie/internationals/
Organisers Instructions:

PLEASE NOTE THAT ENTRIES FOR THIS RACE CLOSE ON THE 1ST OF MARCH (No waiting lists or transfers after this point)

MANDATORY SHOWERPROOF JACKET MUST BE CARRIED/WORN DURING ALL IMRA EVENTS
Hi Strict cut-off times will be imposed at each of the aid points along the route. These are:

  1. Balinastoe (halfway): 13:00
  2. Crone Woods Car Park (return): 14:45
  3. Curtlestown Car Park (return): 15:30

Also please note the earlier start time for this race. For any runners who feel that they may have difficulty with the cut-offs early starts will be facilitated - there will be an early start at 8:30am. PLEASE NOTE - the Early Start is only for people who feel the cut off times will be tight. A number of people took the early start last year who clearly did not need to. In order to prevent this from happening this year, your finishing time will be adjusted to 6 hours if you finish under this time AND take the early start. So please do not take the early start if you feel you will finish around 6 hours or less.

Kit Requirements: A raincoat will be required to be carried by all runners.

There will be a special handcrafted Wicklow Way mug for each finisher on the day

Please note registration is at the Johnny Foxes overflow Carpark for the 2019 event THE CARPARK IS FOR ULTRA RUNNERS ONLT PLEASE CARPOOL Please do not park at Johnny Foxes. Please follow marshals directions on the morning.

Volunteers (Non-Running)

You need to have done 2 non-running volunteer roles in a calendar year to qualify for end of year prize

Volunteers (Running)

Check with race director if they have a need for people volunteering and running. Race directors need a minimum number of people available throughout the race to make the race work so non-running volunteers are preferable. While it can be helpful, volunteering in a volunteer and race capacity does not count towards qualifying for end of year prize
